Why do you need a fence?
A fence, whether it is cheap, budget, or expensive, primarily plays a protective role; it prevents intruders, as well as large animals, from entering the site. Therefore, the structure must have a sufficient margin of safety and have appropriate dimensions (height).
On the other hand, the fence serves as a kind of framing for the site, so it should look neat and decorative.
An inexpensive fence can be made from various materials; fences that are a combination of several types, compatible in style and functionality, can look quite attractive.
Those who want to build a fence in a short time and with minimal labor costs have the opportunity to buy a ready-made cheap fence for their dacha, or order its manufacture and installation on a turnkey basis.
Those who want to save a little money and enjoy the creative process can get creative and make a beautiful fence with their own hands.
Now let’s get down to business and look in detail at the options for country fences, the materials for their manufacture, and find out what advantages and disadvantages they differ in.
Metal fence
A fence made of corrugated sheets or corrugated sheets is one of the most rational options for a suburban area. Relatively low costs, the possibility of independent design and assembly allow you to get good savings and high-quality results.
As advantages we note:
- possibility of long-term operation;
- neat, attractive appearance, ability to choose colors;
- low cost;
- easy installation, you can assemble it yourself;
- ease of care.
To build such a fence you will need:
- Prepare holes for supports at a distance of 2-2.5 m; for the supports themselves, you can take cheap concrete fence posts or used metal pipes;
- At the bottom of the holes, make a cushion of crushed stone, at least 20 cm thick;
- Install load-bearing concrete or metal structures;
- Fill the holes with concrete made from fine crushed stone or granite screenings, sand and cement;
- After the concrete has completely hardened, weld the cross members to the supports; profile pipes are usually used;
- Using self-tapping screws, attach sheets of corrugated sheets to the joists.
A more expensive option for a metal fence is to use metal sheets, rods, and mesh for spans. When making such a fence, decorative forged or welded fragments are often used. Welding is used to connect fencing fragments.
In order to emphasize the beauty of landscape design on a site, they often resort to installing sectional fences; corrugated metal sheets can be used as cladding material.
Fences made of metal rods can be classified as economy class, but they have a significant drawback - they do not create a tightly closed space, i.e. everything that happens in the yard will be visible to passersby.
It is not necessary to build a foundation for metal structures.
Let's watch a video about cheap fences, budget options and those that will allow you to build a reliable fence:
Chain-link fence
The attractiveness of this lightweight structure is that it:
- lets in the light of the sun,
- does not create obstacles to moving air,
- allows you to clearly highlight the boundaries of the site.
It is also important that you do not have to listen to complaints from the owners of the neighboring plot that a shadow is constantly falling on their favorite flowers.
Several types of mesh are used for fencing:
- regular;
- galvanized;
- with plastic coating.
It is recommended to choose a coated mesh, because a regular one outdoors will quickly become rusty. This point is especially important for areas with a humid climate.
When installing a chain-link fence, you can use wooden, metal, and reinforced concrete posts.
Euro picket fence
It consists of strips of galvanized metal sheets.
The strength of the material allows it to withstand significant wind loads, and the decorative nature of the coating provides a decorative appearance.
Mostly used for fencing small areas, the positive aspects are practicality and reliability. They can be equipped with street lighting.
Wooden fence, wattle fence
Inexpensive fencing can be made from wood.
This classic option has many solutions, presented in the form:
- picket fence;
- fence;
- fences made of slabs or palisades;
- the cheapest DIY pallet fence;
- stylish version of the "American ranch".
You can make a fence at minimal cost from branches, pipes or wooden supports; such a fence is called a wattle fence. It looks quite original and decorative.
For work you will need pipes with a diameter of 80 mm, branches of different trees. If possible, it is better to use willow, vine, pussy willow, but if they are not available, cut branches of fruit trees will do.
Pillars can be made from trunks and thick branches of deciduous trees; it is better to install them at a distance of 50-60 cm from each other. But if the rods are thick and long enough, the distance can be increased accordingly. The outer 3 supports are installed close, about 20 cm from each other.
Since wood material is prone to rotting, before starting work it should be thoroughly treated with antifungal impregnations; it is advisable to treat the part of the supports that will sink into the soil with resin.
After installing the supports, they are braided with branches and varnished. Climbing plants planted along the fence, for example, morning glory, look very picturesque.
Traditional picket fence
For its construction, wooden planks are used; wooden columns or metal pipes (D = 60 mm) can serve as supports. For greater stability, the holes under the columns are concreted. Next, logs are attached to the columns, and wooden shtakhetins are fixed to them with self-tapping screws.
To make the fence presentable, it is covered with a ridge strip. It will also protect the wood material from excess moisture.
Air passes freely through the picket fence; it does not create a dense shadow, i.e. trees and bushes growing nearby will not suffer from such a neighborhood.
Let's watch a useful video about creating a modern wooden fence with your own hands:
We use a croaker
An original fence can be created from the remains that are obtained as a result of processing lumber. The resulting cuts imitate wood well, and the appearance of such a fence is quite aesthetic.
If we talk about what is the cheapest fence you can build with your own hands, then you should definitely remember about the slab, its cost is quite low, because it is classified as waste from the wood processing industry.
Preparation of the slab consists of cleaning the remaining bark, polishing the surface of the wood, and treating it with an antiseptic. Supports can be used wooden, concrete, metal. The part of the supports buried in the ground should be treated accordingly.
To give the supports stability, different methods are used, depending on the density of the soil:
- they are hammered into loamy soil with a sledgehammer,
- In chernozem or sandy soil, depressions of a larger diameter are made; after installing the support, they are covered with crushed stone, stones, and filled with cement-sand mortar.
Sheathing can be done in any direction; nails or screws can be used for fastening. The fixed fragments of the slab are covered with varnish or paint. It is better to cover the end parts of the supports with metal or plastic cones.
Installation of an American wooden fence
Supports for this option can be used wooden; pre-treatment with antiseptics and melted resin will be required for the part of the logs that will be dug into the ground.
After marking the territory, they dig in corner columns, then pull ropes between them and mark the installation locations of intermediate supports. They are placed at a distance of approximately 2 m from each other.
To fix the transverse elements, nails or screws are used. To maximize the life of the structure, it is coated with varnish or paint.
Plastic structures
For now, they are considered innovative, but it is possible that due to the relatively low cost and ease of installation, as well as high-quality characteristics, such designs will quickly find their admirers and gain popularity.
You can assemble the plastic fencing yourself.
The material used to make the panels is of high quality, is durable, easy to maintain, and is not prone to cracking or fading under the sun.
Plastic fences can imitate natural wooden ones: picket fence, wattle fence.
Polycarbonate fence
It is lightweight, provides protection from winds, dust and noise insulation; special care is not required for this design.
We can only talk about the long service life of polycarbonate if it has a special layer of UV protection. Such a fence must be protected from impacts and scratches.
Most often, polycarbonate is used for the construction of combined structures, but stones, bricks, and concrete significantly make them heavier and significantly increase the cost.
What are the advantages of a photo grid
It is usually used in cases where the old fence is still quite strong, but has already lost its attractiveness. With the help of a photo grid it is easy to update the design and give it newness.
Let's note the positive points:
- the ability to hide the shortcomings of the old structure;
- ventilation;
- ability to withstand low and high temperatures.
The service life of the mesh is from 5 to 7 years.
Reinforced PVC mesh can be installed on any base; it is also suitable for decorating outdated facades and gazebos.
Hedge - cheap and beautiful
You can fence off your site from the road or neighbors using a hedge, i.e. Plants planted densely are unlikely. A hedge will last a long time, the main thing is that it is properly cared for. The view is quite picturesque.
For planting, you can use shrubs, coniferous and deciduous plants:
- western thujas;
- honeysuckle and rose hips;
- hops and hydrangea.
It is best to plant plants in the spring; at first you will need to water. Growing bushes will need to be trimmed systematically.
Gabions
A gabion is constructed from metal mesh and stones.Of course, it can be classified as budget if stones are an affordable material in your area and can be collected for free in the vicinity of the site.
Gabion is a fairly strong, reliable and durable fence; its beauty can compete with a brick or stone fence.
It is possible to make a gabion yourself, and this work is done very quickly.
There are many options for a cheap fence around the site; choosing an option that suits the design, which you can do yourself, is not at all difficult.
Comments
Wow, so many ideas! We have a large plot of land and now the question of a fence has arisen. My husband is leaning towards mesh + live plants (loaches, for example) I want something more decent... But I realize that the plot is huge and it will take a lot of money. You can, of course, make a mesh from the back side. But how to combine all this with a decent front?
By the way, I’ve never seen polycarbonate fences before - who made them? What are the pros/cons.
