Planting onions on turnips

In order to get a great harvest of large onions, it is necessary to plant them using onion sets with an average size of 1.5-3 cm.

Before you start planting, you need to carefully sort out the onion sets and weed out all the low-quality bulbs, and sort what remains according to parameters so that the shoots are as uniform as possible. Initially, large bulbs are planted, then medium-sized bulbs and only then the smallest ones.

If you have onion sets from the previous harvest, which were stored at an average temperature of 18-20 degrees, then you should not warm them up, but if you have purchased onions for planting, then it is better to preheat them 2-3 days before sowing at a temperature of 30 degrees -35 using heating devices. After warming up, the onion for sowing, wrapped in a fabric bag, should be immersed in a solution (10 liters of water per 1 tablespoon of any complex fertilizer) for 10-14 hours. Then place the seed in a solution of copper sulfate for 10 minutes (1 teaspoon per 10 liters of water).

But there is another way to process onions before sowing: pour the seed into a bucket and fill it with water at a temperature of 70 degrees for just a couple of minutes, and then lower it into cold water for about 1-2 minutes. This procedure is carried out just before sowing.

Onions are planted in a previously prepared bed, which is cleared of all kinds of weeds and properly fertilized with organic and mineral substances. Small grooves are made on the ridge, cm deep.4 and a distance of 15 cm between each other.

Planting is usually carried out in late September - early October. Before frosts, the seedlings should be insulated from freezing and, accordingly, death; for this purpose, the ridge is insulated with sawdust with a layer of 5 cm. In the spring, the sawdust is removed. In winter, you need to make sure that the beds with onions are not abundantly filled with water, as the sets can rot. Turnip onions can also be planted in the spring, but only “winter onions” are distinguished by the greatest durability and productivity.
