When and how to plant tulips
Tulips bloom in early spring. Already on March 8th, they can be presented to your beloved women, and as soon as the snow melts, they begin to bloom on their own plots of land. However, the question arises: when should you plant tulips so that they cover the garden by the beginning of spring?
There are two opinions on this matter: some gardeners argue that it is advisable to plant bulbs in the spring along with other flowers and vegetables, while others strongly recommend doing this in the fall.
Homeland of tulips is Central Asia, in early spring the mountain slopes and fields are covered with a carpet of tulips. As soon as the warmth comes, the flowers immediately dry out, the petals fall off and only the bulb remains of the flower. With the arrival of autumn, the bulbs form new roots, which feed the bulb all winter so that it blooms again in the spring.
Cultivated tulips have the same life cycle as wild ones, so they should still be planted in the fall. After the tulip has faded, the bulbs need to be dug up and stored until autumn.
The optimal time for planting tulips ranges from mid-September to the end of October. The time must be chosen depending on the characteristics of the region and weather conditions in it. For example, in central Russia, bulbs are planted at the end of September, in the south - in October.
Determine date planting tulips It’s better not according to the calendar, but according to your own observations of the weather:
- The soil temperature at a depth of 10 cm should reach +8 degrees.
- If the temperature is above +9 degrees, then rooting will be problematic, and the bulb will most likely die in winter.
- If the temperature is below +7 degrees, then the bulbs will not have time to take root, and in the spring they will not bloom normally.
25 days are enough for the bulbs to root. If the planting date was missed, then you can plant the flower before December, but it is better to postpone this procedure to spring.
Features of planting tulips in spring
in spring tulips are planted only if this period was missed in the fall for some reason. Growing a tulip in the spring is somewhat more difficult, however, it is quite possible.
To speed up flowering, put the bulbs in the refrigerator.
It was mentioned above that tulips bloom well after freezing in winter, so it is necessary to artificially ensure such conditions. Under no circumstances should the bulbs be placed in the freezer.
The onion should lie in the refrigerator for one day, then it is washed with a pink solution of potassium permanganate. After this, it can be quietly planted in the ground. This must be done no later than April. If there are still frosts, then it is still necessary to plant the bulbs, just use a special container for this, not open ground.
When warm weather arrives, the bulbs can be carefully moved to the site.
The most important thing when growing tulips in spring is careful adherence to agricultural technology. If you do not properly care for the flower, then over time the bulb will become depleted, and the stems and flowers will become smaller.
The container or box should only be half filled with soil. The minimum distance between the bulbs is selected. The bulbs are sprinkled with a 5 cm layer of soil on top. This procedure is done a month before planting in open ground. If you bought already blooming tulips, you cannot replant them in the ground; you need to wait until the flowering period ends.
Before planting tulips you need to prepare the soil, dig the area to a depth of 25 cm, it is advisable to add humus and washed sand to it for greater water permeability. You can put up to 10 onions in one hole.
Caring for tulips and bulbs
When applying fertilizers, it is prohibited to use preparations containing chlorine. During the entire life cycle, three feedings are done:
- when the first shoots appear
- before flowering
- after flowering
The amount of watering should be calculated so that water penetrates to the bulk of the roots. One square meter of tulips consumes from 10 to 40 liters of water. To avoid burning the leaves, neither water nor fertilizer should get into them. As soon as the flowering period ends, watering is stopped.
You need to dig up weeds in a timely manner, as they not only transmit pests to the tulips, but also take moisture and nutrients from the soil. Bulbs also require special care before planting. In the fall, they are forced out; this process is long and requires compliance with certain stages.
After purchase or growing bulbs it needs to be peeled and inspected for defects and areas affected by parasites. In addition, the peeled onion will receive more nutrients from the soil.
Before planting, the bulb must be degreased with a solution of potassium permanganate. It should be placed in a weak pink solution for at least half an hour. Instead of potassium permanganate, you can use a solution of celandine. To eliminate the risk of infection by putrefactive bacteria, tulip bulbs are planted in a clean substrate, not last year’s.
The dug up bulbs are placed in boxes in one layer. They are kept in the open air for several days for ventilation, and then stored in a room where the temperature is kept at 22 degrees, preferably in the attic of the house. After two weeks, the bulbs are cleaned of old scales and soil. In such conditions, the bulbs are stored until August, then moved to conditions where the temperature remains no more than 17 degrees. After a month, the bulbs can be planted.
Growing and caring for tulips is not so difficult; they do not require special, exotic conditions. Any gardener can grow tulips, the main thing is to observe all the timing and temperature conditions, follow the rules for processing and storing the bulbs.
