How to grow onions for greens at home in winter
In order to grow onions on the windowsill or a balcony in the winter months, no special skills are needed. It is important that there are good onions or seeds, and that the owner has enough patience.
There are several methods of growing this way:
- in the ground;
- in sawdust;
- from seeds;
- in water, or by hydroponics.
Important requirements that must be observed with any method:
- It is worth using a healthy onion. It should be dense, without rot or other defects, and round in shape.
- There should be a formed root cup, preferably long.
- Ideally, use a sprouted, dense onion, this will speed up the growing process.
- Only the shiny skin or scales are taken, so if necessary, you need to remove the dark part.
- Before planting, soak the onion; this procedure is not required if planted on water.
It’s simple, the main thing is to act according to the plan and not rush things.
How to grow onions for feathers on a windowsill in the ground
To grow onions in the ground you will need:
- The soil. In winter, you can only buy good soil in a store; it is better to take soil intended for cacti or universal soil.
- Healthy, old bulbs (preferably onions) that have sprouted green shoots. Some people use seedlings for planting, this option is possible, but you will have to wait a long time for green sprouts, and it is used only once.
If you decide to grow leeks, it is important to leave them in water for a week so that sprouts appear, and then plant them in prepared soil.
Special container: boxes, flowerpots, container.
Proceed according to the following scheme:
- Remove the top scales from the cooked onions.
- Cut off the top by one and a half centimeters, but if there are sprouts, this procedure should not be done.
- Soak the root area in water. It is important to use warm water; the procedure lasts several hours.
- It is necessary to fill the prepared container with soil, a depth of 4 to 7 centimeters.
- We plant the prepared material at a distance of 2 cm from each other, without deepening it. The main thing is that the roots are in contact with the ground.
- The earth is flooded with water. For irrigation you need to use settled and heated water. Fill the soil lightly, carefully so as not to wet the bulbs themselves.
- There is no need to place the container on the windowsill right away. For germination, it is better to place the container in a cool and dark place for a couple of days.If you use sprouted onions, you can put them directly on the windowsill.
- After 14 days it will begin to germinate, sprouts up to fifteen centimeters in height will appear. Now the onion is watered once every four days.
You can cut the feathers only to the middle so that you can harvest more.
By following these recommendations, you can eat green onions throughout the winter.

How to grow green onions at home without soil, in water
The instructions are as follows:
- First, the material is prepared. It is necessary to select onion heads of the same diameter, approximately two centimeters.
- For a day, the onion is placed in warm water and placed on a radiator or other place where there is heat.
- Get rid of the dark husk, thanks to this it will be possible to detect damaged areas.
- Cut off the top.
- Prepare a shallow tray and place the heads vertically, spine down.
- Pour a little water into the container so that it covers the onions by a quarter.
- Add water periodically as it decreases.
Onions do not need fertilizers, since the feather takes all the necessary substances from the bulb. If you want to speed up the growth process, you can put a couple of tablets of activated carbon or a solution of wood ash into the water, the proportion is fifty grams of ash per ten liters.
After 2 weeks, new feathers will appear, which can be used for fresh consumption, cut into salads, or used as greens to decorate hot dishes.
How to grow green onions at home in sawdust
This option is no less effective and is often used by housewives.
Operating principle:
- It is necessary to prepare sawdust. To do this, they are poured with boiling water and left until the water reaches room temperature. The water is drained, and the sawdust is laid out in a planting container.
- Saltpeter is being prepared. Five grams of the substance dissolves in a liter of water. Pour this liquid over the sawdust to saturate it with nitrogen. Also, saltpeter prevents sawdust from absorbing nutrients from onion heads.
- Some people add wood ash, this protects against the development of rot.
- The planting material is planted close to each other, deepening the bulbs by half.
- The remaining space between the bow is filled with sawdust.
- Place the flowerpot or container on the windowsill on the sunny side of the house. It is important that there are no drafts.
After planting, the first watering is carried out after 7 days. Then the sawdust is watered once a week, and in case of high humidity, every 10 days.
How to grow green onions at home from seeds
The next option is planting onions with seeds.
First you need to prepare the seeds. They need to be dipped in a solution with water and potassium permanganate. Then plant it in the soil to a depth of 2 cm. Vermicompost and coconut fiber should be used as soil, maintaining a one to two ratio.
Be sure to provide drainage in the container.
Cover the container with seeds with plastic wrap. The seed is opened only after the first shoots appear.
In the room where the seeds germinate, the temperature should be at least 18 degrees. In the future, the temperature regime should be at least 12 degrees.
It's worth being patient. The first feather grows slowly. However, after 60 days there will be a good, abundant harvest. Fresh greens will last for a long time.
Growing onions as a business idea
Starting to grow onions for your own business is a good idea. This type of entrepreneurship is not only profitable, but also simple. Onions do not require a special climate, care or high economic costs.
If you decide to start a business, you need to think about the scale. Here you can’t get by with just a few beds and especially a balcony. It is necessary to create a greenhouse complex; in summer, a large area of open ground can be allocated. For a greenhouse you need to buy all the necessary materials.
The selection of varieties plays an important role. Not all types of onions are productive and give a good harvest in greenhouses. It is important to take this into account when purchasing seeds.
Think over the sales organization. Sell onions yourself or negotiate with distributors in stores or at the market.
If you do not have experience in agriculture, it is not a good idea to immediately build large greenhouses and plant a lot of seed. First, sow a small plot, master all the nuances of the technology and find regular customers. After this, you can confidently expand your business.
So, even a child can grow onions at home. The main thing is to choose a healthy bulb and do not forget about watering.
Constant greenery on the table will delight your household and remind you of summer in the cold season.

Comments
We plant several bulbs every winter in the ground or in water. In water, in my opinion, onions grow better and faster. I'll try next time, putting activated carbon tablets in the water.
I buy special cells for onions under water. For a family of 3 people, 20 bulbs are enough for 1.5 months of green onions. The only negative is that you need to change the water because... There is an unpleasant onion smell.
So, well, you can’t make a business out of this for sure, I’ll say right away that thinking about surviving on this and making good money is an absolutely futile activity. But for yourself in the kitchen, to always have fresh onions, this is great.
Almost all year round I grow lu for greens on the balcony and windowsill for my own use. Most often I take already withered heads, but sometimes I grew onions from seeds. But in terms of business, I didn’t consider this option; in our region we don’t have problems with inexpensive onions.
