Garlic for the winter: when to plant

For winter, garlic is planted in the fall. Planting in the ground is carried out 1-1.5 months before the onset of frost. The optimal time is late September - early October. In the southern and western regions, planting can be done later - in November. Traditional planting is carried out to a depth of 3-5 cm.

In the northern regions, planting winter garlic requires a greater depth of 10-15 cm, so it is carried out much earlier. The dates stretch from the end of August to mid-October. Deep planting promotes better rooting garlic.

Preparing for planting: choosing soil and location

The soil for growing garlic should be loose and neutral acidity. It is best to plant on loamy soils. A place for garlic should be chosen that is lit. If the area is in the shade, then sparse planting is performed. For autumn planting, use freshly harvested garlic. It is important that the bulbs are well dried.

Garlic bulbs should be of medium size. They are divided into large and medium cloves. If the head contains only 2-3 cloves, then such garlic is not suitable for planting.Sick and damaged teeth are discarded. Next, rinse the planting material in a saline solution. 3 tablespoons of salt are diluted in 5 liters of water.

Then dip the cloves in a solution of copper sulfate. To prepare it, you need to dilute a tablespoon of vitriol in 10 liters of water. In this form the teeth planted for the winter. There is no need to remove scales from garlic, then the plant will be less susceptible to various diseases. The distance between large cloves should be about 6-8 cm, and between medium-sized cloves about 4-6 cm.

Immediately before planting, the soil must be dug to a depth of about 20-30 cm. If there are weeds, they must be selected. Garden compost and phosphorus-potassium fertilizer are added to the soil. You will need 15-20 liters of compost per square meter. The fertilizer is diluted in water (15 g per 10 liters). Instead of potash fertilizer, you can add one and a half liters of wood ash.

Planting winter garlic is carried out as follows: mark planting sites in the garden bed. Make small grooves to a depth of 6-8 cm. The distance between plantings should be about 20 cm. Next, the garlic cloves are planted in holes and deepened by 5-10 cm, depending on the planting date and region. From clove to clove there should be 6-8 cm. In this case, the planting material should be placed bottom down.

You can also place the cloves on the side when planting. To ensure that the garlic overwinters well, add peat or humus to the garden bed after 14-18 days of the week. The layer thickness should be within 2 cm. Garlic is recommended plant in the place where tomatoes, eggplants, pumpkins, peppers, and cucumbers grew. It is not advisable to plant this crop after root crops. They deplete potassium in the soil, which negatively affects plant development.

Care after landing

After planting, fill the holes with compost and be sure to mulch. Autumn leaves, sawdust, spruce branches, etc. can be used as mulch. With the onset of spring, the shelter is removed. With the appearance of the first shoots, loosening is carried out, as the soil becomes compacted during the winter. It is important to ensure the supply of oxygen to the garlic roots.

Caring for garlic involves feeding. Garlic needs to be fed 2-3 times per season. As soon as the first shoots appear, dilute 40 g of urea in 10 liters of water. Per square meter you will need 2-3 liters of solution. The next feeding is carried out 14 days after the first. In this case, bird droppings are used. To prepare the solution, take the ingredients in a ratio of 1:15. Second feeding usually combined with watering.

The last feeding is carried out in mid-June. Add 2 cups of ash to 10 liters of water and mix. Garlic should be watered no more than once a week. During drought, the amount of watering is increased. After rain or watering, loosening is necessary.

To reduce watering, after adding water to the root of the bed, mulch it so that the moisture does not evaporate quickly. It should be remembered that there is no need to water the garlic 2-3 weeks before harvesting. If you do not take this rule into account, then moisture-saturated garlic will not be stored well. Garlic is harvested in early August. If the garlic inflorescence is cracked or the leaves are completely dead, then these are clear signs of harvesting.

It is important not to be late in harvesting, as bulb will disintegrate into cloves and cannot be stored in this form. There are no special requirements for growing winter garlic. The main thing is to plant on time and prepare planting material.

My grandfather and I constantly plant in the fall. We noticed that the harvest is much richer than the spring planting. We live in the southern region. Therefore, we plant in November, and sometimes in December.
