Marigolds or Chernobrivtsy, origin and description
Like many plants, marigolds, whose Latin name is Tagetes, came to the Eurasian continents during the years of European exploration of America. There, these flowers were widespread in the wild from the South American states to Argentina. When Spanish sailors brought them to Spain, they very quickly spread not only in Europe, but also in Asian countries. Chernobrivtsy or marigolds are annual or perennial herbaceous plants from the Asteraceae family.
Straight stems form a fairly compact bush. There are miniature species, up to 20 cm in height, and tall ones - up to one meter. The roots are well developed and fibrous. The leaves of marigolds are heavily cut, their color ranges from light green to dark green. The inflorescences themselves - the baskets - deserve special attention. The flowers have a peculiar green cover in the form of a cylinder of fused leaves. The marginal female flowers are ligulate. Their color can be:
- dark brown
- orange
- yellow
According to the form they are distinguished:
- chrysanthemum-shaped
- Dianthus
- simple
- terry
- semi-double

A distinctive property of the plant is its strong, slightly pungent and bitter odor, which not everyone likes. Low-growing varieties and hybrids are used as border or ground cover plants. Medium and tall types of marigolds are universal flowers, suitable for flower beds, flowerpots, and designing paths. They are good for both mono and mixed plantings. Due to their endurance and unpretentiousness, they are widely used for landscaping in populated areas.
In addition to their beautiful decorative appearance, marigolds are used in folk medicine and cooking. In one of the regions of Georgia, dried inflorescences are needed to prepare many dishes, for example, such a well-known as satsivi nut sauce. The seasoning made from marigolds is called Imeretian saffron. Thus, if you plant Chernobrivtsa flowers on your site, you can get both beauty and benefit.
How to plant and grow marigolds
There are about thirty species of marigolds in total, but, as a rule, only three are grown in culture:
- marigolds are erect, the tallest, up to 120 cm
- rejected marigolds, medium size, 60 cm
- marigold thin-leaved, not higher than 40 cm
You can grow marigolds by sowing seeds in the ground or by sowing seedlings. You can collect the seeds yourself in the fall, but to avoid surprises when growing flowers from hybrid specimens, it is better to buy the seeds in a specialized store. It is important to choose those that were stored after collection for no more than two years and retained good germination. At the end of May, marigolds are sown directly into the ground, but such Chernobrivets will not bloom before the beginning of August. When grown through seedlings, flowering begins in early June.
Sowing marigolds for seedlings
To determine the sowing date of Chernobrivtsev seedlings, it is important to take into account that they are planted in the ground in late May - early June, and they need 8 - 10 weeks to grow, so it is optimal to sow the seeds in the last ten days of March - the first ten days of April. When sowing at this time, seedlings do not need additional lighting. When seedlings are produced for sale, they are sowed already in February when additional lighting is organized. Soil for seedlings is made up of equal parts:
- forest land
- peat
- sand
- humus
You can choose a different composition, but priming should be light, permeable to air and moisture. The planting container is filled first with drainage mixture and then with soil. When planting with further picking, the seeds are sown in an almost continuous row. If space allows, you can grow Chernobrivtsi without picking, placing the seeds at a distance of five cm from each other.

To speed up the process, the seeds can be left in a warm place on a damp cloth for 48 hours. Until the emergence of friendly shoots, it is better to keep the box with crops indoors at + 25 degrees, and when they sprout, further cultivation takes place at + 20. Water the emerging seedlings directly to the root; there is no need to over-water them. At the stage of two to three true leaves, the seedlings are planted in separate cups. As soon as the threat of late frosts passes, the seedlings are planted in open ground.
Any soil is suitable for Chernobrivtsev, preferably a place well lit by the sun, but these flowers also tolerate partial shade well.
During the period of bud formation, you can add a phosphorus-potassium mixture. An excess of nitrogen can lead to an increase in green mass and a decrease in the number of flowers. To protect against spider mites, Chernobrivtsy can be treated with the biological product Fitoverm. When growing marigolds, you need to know that these plants can protect the garden from pests and a traditional medicine for people.
