Ampelous plants for the garden, their features, photos, names of popular ones
The word "Ampel" is translated from German as a hanging flower vase.
Gardeners distinguish several types; for convenient study, we present them in the form of Table 1.
Type of hanging | a brief description of |
climbing | The stems have tendrils, with the help of which they cling to a nearby structure and grow upward |
Curly | They quickly wrap themselves in a spiral around any support. |
Creeping | They grow and weave along the ground |
Multi-socket | The flower simultaneously has many new buds and looks lush and rich. |
Ampelous plants divided into five classes:
- herbaceous;
- succulents;
- decorative deciduous;
- subshrubs;
- blooming.
Among the popular varieties are the following:
- Surfinia.
- Hoya.
- Petunia.
- Fuchsia.
- Pelargonium.
- Achimenes.
- Cissus.
- Begonia.
- Verbena.
- Lobelia.
- Chlorophytum.
The most in demand are climbing and flowering varieties, especially if they are perennial and fast-growing. These varieties are planted in flowerpots, flower pots, and wooden boxes.
When planting and placing a flower, it is worth considering that there are heat-loving or shade-loving species; if you do not pay attention to this factor, the flower will fade or die altogether.
Also, in the process of forming compositions, it is necessary to select varieties with similar growing conditions.
Let's watch a useful video about hanging plants for the garden:
Advantages of vertical garden gardening
There are many advantages of vertical gardening:
- Ampelous flowers help to create a beautiful and cozy design for both a very small garden plot and large terraces and gardens.
- They are distinguished by their mobility. Hanging structures can easily change floral arrangements, adding newness and modernity each time.
- With the help of such plants, you can hide unsuccessful or ugly areas, decorate not very attractive plots of land, bring freshness to them, make them bright, expressive, and highlight vertical garden lines.
- The big advantage is the ease and simplicity of maintenance. The only thing is that flowers require timely watering and fertilizing. There is no need to weed, get rid of weeds, hill up the soil or mulch.
- Some hanging flowers can be used for landscaping an insulated balcony or garden in winter. Not all flowers can boast of this feature.
- A variety of color paints, the ability to combine different types, creating entire compositions.
These are just the main advantages; every gardener can learn about the rest as he works with flowers.
Let's watch another useful video about caring for hanging flowers:
Shade-loving ampelous flowers
Varieties that love shade and do not like direct contact with the sun are indicated in Table 2.
Name | a brief description of |
Ampelous fuchsia | It grows only in the shade and likes moderate watering. The color of the buds is pink or white. Flowering occurs in early September and continues until October. |
Begonia | The peculiarity of the plant are large inflorescences of different shades and neat small leaves. Grows in gardens in areas where there is shade throughout the day, in flowerpots and pots with a stand on a high stem. |
Vanka wet or balsam | Annual. If you don't plant it in the shade, it quickly withers and dies. You can place flowerpots under the branches of fruit trees, thereby creating a lacy shadow. Abundant flowering is observed in the summer months, and if the weather remains warm outside for a long time, it lasts until late autumn |
Fast-growing ampelous plants
The flowers listed in Table 3 are considered fast-growing.
Name | Brief description and features |
Ceropegia | They belong to the succulent variety. The shoots are thread-like, hanging, branching and bare. The leaves are unusual, bud- or heart-shaped, fleshy and dense in texture. The flower pleases with abundant blooms all year round. Growth is fast, the shoot grows one meter in length. Unique structure of the rim, there is a fusion of the tube |
Surfinia | There is rapid growth. The crop is propagated vegetatively. Amazing variety of shades |
Verbena | They belong to the class of herbaceous and annual. Flowering occurs in early spring and lasts until the end of October, under good weather conditions. It grows and expands very quickly. The shade of the buds is red, pink, purple or blue. The foliage is hairy and dense in texture. Grows in hanging baskets or containers. The plant can be used for landscaping balconies or enclosed terraces during frosty months |
Drought-resistant flowers for pots
There are types of hanging plants that can easily tolerate drought; they have the following qualities:
- ivy-shaped pelargonium, with proper care, flowering is observed all year round;
- ferulolate series, calmly tolerates dry weather and long-term cold snaps;
- sedum;
- rhipsalis;
- Wood's ceropegia;
- Rowley.
The best flowers for flowerpots in the garden
All hanging ones are very beautiful and attractive, but still gardeners celebrate the best among the best. We indicate them in Table 4.
Name | a brief description of |
Lobelia | Herbaceous perennial. The inflorescences are small, but very bright and colorful: violet, purple, blue. Additionally, the buds are decorated with shiny, densely growing small leaves. |
Nasturtium | Shoots can be weaving or erect. The colors of the inflorescences are red, yellow and bright orange. They bloom before the first frost. |
Petunia | The most unpretentious of the hanging ones, it requires minimal care. Loves warmth and lots of light |
Annual alyssum | Considered decorative. Literally covered with fragrant buds and resembles the shape of a ball. The stem is long and strongly branched |
Although this is a matter of taste, some like representatives of the flora with lush and rich foliage, others like large, multi-colored buds, in fact, you can plant different varieties, giving a special zest to the design.
Features of caring for hanging plants
If we talk about care, it is worth emphasizing just a few points:
- Watering should be moderate and regular. If the size of the flowerpot is small, then watering is carried out more often. On hot days, the procedure is performed in the morning and evening every day. If no watering has been carried out for several days, and the soil has become very hardened, then pieces of ice are placed on top of the soil. The ice will begin to melt and saturate the soil with moisture. As soon as water soaks through the soil, it will begin to flow out through the drain holes.
- Applying fertilizers, as a top dressing, it is better to use a complex composition intended for flowers planted in containers or flowerpots. The procedures are performed regularly, fertilizers are considered the only nutrition, and the appearance depends on them.
- Pruning dried shoots and wilted buds.
By performing these manipulations when growing hanging plants, problems should not arise.
How ampelous and cascading flowers are used in garden design
There are several nuances. It is important to hang containers or baskets so that they do not interfere with walking.
Periodically change the compositions so that they are combined with other details of the garden.
On lawns or terraces, it is worth installing a flowerpot with a forged base or leg.
Instead of pots, some use unusual elements: a broken bicycle, a wheelbarrow, an old shoe, children's toys.
You can experiment to your own taste or borrow interesting ideas from others.
So, hanging plants are an excellent option for any design. Landscaping in this way is always a winner, maintenance is minimal, and the beauty is incredible!
Comments
To be honest, ampelous lobelia disappointed me last year. She grew better on the ground than in a pot, and moreover, she was clearly more comfortable in partial shade than in the sun. But on the bag of seeds the opposite was written. This year only petunias are hanging.
