Large-fruited currants: record-breaking varieties

Currant

Currants are an extremely valuable berry in terms of both taste and health benefits. Black, red and white berries are excellent filling for pies and cakes, an integral ingredient in compotes, jelly, preserves and preserves. The only drawback of currants is the extremely small size of its berries, due to which the harvesting process turns into a real workout for the nervous system and drags on for many hours. However, today, thanks to the many years of efforts of breeders, gardeners have access to such luxury as large-fruited currant.

Large-fruited black currant has a huge number of varieties, the truly impressive size of the berries is evidenced by their very names. For example, very common and beloved by many connoisseurs of this healthy berry are varieties such as Giant, Hero, Record, Champion, Large and Large-fruited. And, of course, we cannot fail to mention the wonderful variety of currants, which has a truly original name - Largest of all. But this name does not entirely correspond to reality, because The Yadrenaya variety is recognized as the largest currant: the maximum weight of its berries reaches seven and sometimes eight grams.

However, breeders work not only in the direction of increasing the mass of the berries themselves. Thus, several years ago, Far Eastern specialists created varieties of currants, having small berries that are collected in huge clusters. One of the most successful varieties of this kind can be safely called Lucia - the owner of luxurious thirty-centimeter bunches.

Yes, I recently discovered these varieties myself and I’m thinking about planting them next year, but I read somewhere that they are not so sweet... Or does it depend on the variety? Does size affect this?

My aunt, who lives near St. Petersburg, has been growing black currants of the Leningrad Giant variety for many years. What amazing berries! Large, like cherries, sweet, fleshy, juicy. Just a miracle!
