Propagation of grapes by cuttings in spring

I love grapes! It’s a pity that where I live, in the North-West of Russia, only decorative grapes grow - a huge vine that wraps houses and roofs in green leaves in summer and burgundy leaves in autumn. Although no, some brave and desperate amateur gardeners grow fruit-bearing grapes in our not-so-kind climate. And they succeed! Of course, this requires a lot of effort, patience, time and knowledge. But the result is worth it - amazingly tasty and aromatic grapes will be a real reward for the gardener who cultivated them. How does it happen? propagation of grapes by cuttings? in spring?
It is worth immediately noting that this method of growing grapes is the most common and optimal. Still used layering, seeds and grafting. But these methods, in addition to propagating grapes by layering, are very labor-intensive. And propagating grapes by cuttings is a very convenient and practical way to get a plant that analogue of maternal.
Grapes are propagated by cuttings using this method:
- in the fall, somewhere in August-early September, it is necessary to cut off the top of the vine. Moreover, you will have to cut it anyway - these are the agrotechnical conditions for growing grapes. So why not get double the benefit - a strong and healthy mother plant and a new shoot?
- the cut should be made under the fifth leaf
- the bottom two sheets are removed
- the top of the cutting is cut off so that there is a margin of 1 centimeter above the top leaf
- treat the lower part of the cutting with a root formation stimulator
- plant the cuttings in a pot filled with soil like this: half soil with sand, half sand. The soil must be moist
- “build” a mini-greenhouse over a pot of grapes - create a microclimate, but do not forget to ventilate it so that the cuttings do not rot from excess moisture
In spring, the cuttings are planted in a permanent place, being careful not to damage the roots.
Good luck!
