Proper planting of cherries in spring is the key to a rich harvest

Cherry is a heat-loving southern tree. Therefore, planting cherries in the spring should be done on a gentle slope on the south side, the place should be well lit by the sun, and shadows from other trees should not fall on the cherries. If the cherry tree receives a lot of light and heat, then within a few years it will produce a bountiful harvest of large, sweet berries.
Planting cherries in spring - what you need to consider:
- At temperatures below 0°C, you cannot plant cherry seedlings, even if you have a winter-hardy variety.
- Sweet cherries love well-drained soil. Sandy soils are not suitable for it and soil with close groundwater is also not suitable; cherries do not tolerate stagnation of water near their root system. If there is no suitable place on your site, you can make a small hill and plant cherries in it.
- The pit for cherries needs to be prepared in the fall and filled with organic fertilizers. The width of the pit should be approximately 1 m, depth 70 cm, fertilizer - 15 kg. Mix fertilizers with soil.
- Cherries are planted in a prepared hole early in the spring, before the buds swell.
- If the roots of the seedlings dry out during transportation, they should be placed in water for 8 hours and only then planted in a hole.
You can plant several varieties of cherries nearby to provide the trees with cross-pollination. It is also a good option if there are cherries growing in the garden with a flowering period that coincides with the flowering of cherries.
