First of all, let's divide strawberries into “regular” ones, which produce a harvest once a season, and “remontant” ones, which continuously bear fruit almost all summer.

Requirements when choosing a strawberry variety

Strawberries are a perennial, early-bearing plant. When choosing a variety, it is necessary to take into account resistance pests, find out how they are transferred illnesses, whether this variety has good taste and what kind of yield it produces. It is best to plant several varieties of strawberries, the ripening periods of which are different: early, mid-ripening and late-ripening, then they can be harvested from the beginning of spring until almost frost.

Be sure to take into account all factors that may affect the quality of fruiting and yield. Consider the area and area where you are going to grow strawberries, the climatic conditions in this place, and the quality of the land.

The most popular remontant strawberry varieties

  • "Maherauha" refers to an early variety of strawberry. Its berries are a rich crimson-red color and very sweet.
  • Strawberries of the Zarya variety are also early ripening. The bushes of the plant grow quite tall. The berries are bright red, more sour than, for example, Queen Elizabeth. This variety tolerates cold well, but requires abundant watering.
  • “Festival” strawberries are a mid-season variety. Gives a large harvest with large, quite sweet berries. Winter hardiness is high.
  • A late-ripening, high-yielding strawberry variety that came to us from the UK, “Red Gauntlet”. It has proven itself to have excellent disease resistance and is not susceptible to gray rot.
  • Another variety called “Mount Everest” arrived from another European country – France. It produces a bountiful harvest, and its fruits are light in color and slightly sour in taste. You can harvest from the end of June until frost.
  • Also among the remontant varieties, “Queen Elizabeth” should be noted. These are large bushes that produce a bountiful harvest of large, shiny berries that taste sweet. With proper care, the weight of the berry is up to 40 grams. The variety is winter-hardy and tolerates diseases well. She gives a mustache very rarely. I sow it with seeds every year.
  • The "Ruyana" variety also does not produce a mustache, but the berries are medium and very aromatic.
  • The German variety "Herzberg" gives good yields and produces a lot of runners, but it is often affected by white spotting.
  • The origin of the variety "Drink blood Auslese" is unknown, but it produces good yields of sweet and sour berries, is winter hardy and produces many runners, which makes it easy to propagate.

  • Of the regular varieties, I like “Mashenka” more. This is an early variety with large, aromatic berries that withstand transportation well. “Mashenka” is also resistant to diseases.
  • The early varieties also include the Elvira variety with large bright red berries.
  • The well-known variety “Zenga Zengana” is a medium-ripening variety, the berries are dark red and medium in size. Many people love this variety for its winter hardiness.
  • "Bogota" is a late-ripening variety with large elastic berries, with a slight sourness. This variety is easy to care for.

In general, for each summer resident the best varieties of strawberries are different, because as many people there are as many opinions.

How to properly plant strawberries on a plantation

If you want to always have fresh, aromatic strawberries “at hand,” then do not experiment with several new varieties at once. It is best to plant three-quarters of the land with already proven varieties, and give 15-20 percent to new varieties to test yield, stability and winter hardiness.

For general planting, the long-known varieties “Junia Smids”, “Zephyr”, and “Tsaritsa” are recommended. As an experiment, try planting "Elsanta" or "Albion". Just keep in mind that the latter require high beds filled with humus.

There is no such variety as “climbing strawberry”. And the popular "Gigantella"In fact, it does not produce a very large harvest, although it has large berries.

More recently, breeders have bred unusual strawberries white. The berries of this variety are very aromatic, and the taste is a bit like pineapple. True, this variety did not cause much excitement and is not very popular now.

Strawberries are a combination of taste and benefits. It improves appetite, can quench thirst well, and normalizes intestinal function. In order for your body to receive the full range of necessary vitamins, sufficient for the whole winter, you need to eat at least 5 kilograms of strawberries over the summer. And berries grown with your own hands will be doubly healthier and more enjoyable.

Comments

At our dacha we planted varieties of strawberries that are best suited to our climate and soil. I really like the variety of strawberries - Queen Elizabeth, it bears fruit all summer long!

But I think it’s better to plant several varieties at once, because they differ so much in taste. Remontant varieties are good because they produce berries for a very long time, and the berries themselves are often larger, but I would not plant only remontant varieties. In terms of taste, I like the regular varieties better.
