How to grow good onions in central Russia?
It is better to use the common method of growing onions for two years, when in the first year onion sets are obtained from seeds, which after wintering are planted to obtain a full-fledged turnip.
Although onions are an unpretentious crop, they still require compliance with certain planting and cultivation rules.
It is not recommended to plant onions in the same place more than once every four years, i.e. Three out of four seasons the bed is given over to other crops. Onions give good yields after cucumbers, zucchini, tomatoes and cabbage.
Planting is done on a warm day in the first ten days of May; later planting will significantly reduce the onion yield. For planting, choose a medium-sized set, up to 1.5 cm in diameter. Large onions can be planted in April on early green feathers.
Just before planting, the onions are heated in hot water (60 degrees C) for several minutes, then immediately cooled in cold water. This treatment will prevent the onion from going into arrows and will increase resistance to disease. The onion bed is carefully dug up, leveled and loosened. Also, before planting, feeding is done (5 kg of humus, 50 g of saltpeter, 50 g of superphosphate, 20 g of potassium chloride per 1 sq.m of land).
The onion is deepened into the holes and added dropwise. The planting depth depends on what shape you want the turnip to be. The deeper the set is planted, the more elongated the bulb will be. The distance between plants when planting should be at least 20cm.
After successful shoots, the onions must be fed a second time with a solution of urea or saltpeter (1 tbsp per 10 liters of water). Before fertilizing, the soil is loosened. The last feeding is carried out after the appearance of the fourth feather with nitrophoska, nitrogen fertilizers or rotted diluted manure.
Harvesting takes place on a clear day in mid to late August, after the plant's leaves have fallen. The harvest is dried in a warm, dry place for several days, after which it is stored.
