The coating has a number of useful properties:

  • Retains moisture in the soil.
  • Does not allow large quantities to germinate weed, which saves herbicides.
  • Keeps the soil loose and allows air to pass through for ventilation.
  • It prevents the ground from freezing in winter and prevents excessive overheating in the spring-summer season. Range of action from - 40 to + 50 degrees.
  • Plants have a larger number of adventitious roots.
  • The resulting harvest has a good presentation: the berries do not touch the ground, do not rot or become dirty.

Features of growing strawberries under film

Before you start boarding strawberries you need to decide what effect you expect from the shelter? Rate of maturation? Saving money on herbicides and watering? Or slowing down the harvest time to enjoy the sweet berries longer?

The type of material chosen depends on these factors:

  • Black material will speed up ripening time strawberries, will not allow weeds to germinate, but this color attracts sunlight and berry bushes can simply “burn out” at high temperatures.
  • The transparent one collects condensation, and you can water the bushes less often, but the weeds will feel very comfortable and will begin to grow actively.
  • Black and white film laid with the white side up will slow down ripening.

Before planting, you need to prepare the soil well:

  • water
  • loosen
  • fertilize

A shelter is laid on the prepared soil and secured to the sides. Make markings on the film and mark the places where you will make the slits. If you are planting bushes with an open root system, that is, only dug up and ready for planting, the slits are made in the shape of a cross with a kitchen or stationery knife. If strawberry with a closed root system (in pots), holes are made under the slots with a hollow pipe with the appropriate diameter.

If there is a drip irrigation tube under the canvas, do not forget about its location and do not accidentally touch it with a knife. The best time for planting strawberries considered to be the end of July, August and September.

How to plant tomatoes under the film? The beds are prepared in advance, as for normal planting in open ground: mineral fertilizers and rotted compost are applied, and then they are passed through with a cultivator and covered with material.

All edges of the canvas are sprinkled with earth, and fairly wide boards are laid between the rows. The shelter will not move off the ridges, and it will be more convenient to move around the site.

Seedlings are planted depending on the variety in different months, but the main thing is that all frosts have passed.

At the planting site, a cross-shaped cut is made with a knife and a small hole is dug, which is well watered. Seedling Carefully place the lump of earth into the hole and straighten the root vertically downwards.

The distance is kept the same as usual, and it depends on the species tomato. Holes are made throughout the entire area for free penetration of rainwater to the root system of the bushes.

Comments

We use this method when growing strawberries. The rest of our vegetable crops grow as usual. But due to the fact that washed strawberries are not stored, that’s why we use this method of covering the beds. The strawberry is clean.

I tried this method when growing tomatoes, strawberries and peppers. I saved a lot of time on weeding; I didn’t notice much difference in terms of increase in yield, but the taste changed and not for the better, especially in tomatoes.
