Hazelnut "Sirena", description

It so happened that any type of nut of the Hazel genus is usually called hazelnut. And the large-fruited forms that are cultivated by humans are called hazelnuts. Most likely, several types of hazel were involved in obtaining the most delicious and largest hazelnuts:

  • ordinary
  • Pontic
  • Lombard walnut

Hazelnut "Sirena" is a variety of Polish selection. He was brought out in 1969. More often it grows in the form of a bush or low tree. It is distinguished by good growth vigor after rooting of seedlings. It can be 4 - 5 meters in height. The leaves of the Sirena hazelnut deserve special attention. They are large, oval, up to 11 cm long and up to 9 cm wide.

The leaf plates are heavily corrugated. After blooming, the color of the leaves is burgundy-red. As it grows, it changes to burgundy-green. The lower, pubescent side of the leaf blades has clearly visible red-pink veins. The leaves sit on heavily pubescent, thin and long petioles.

Male inflorescences - earrings are arranged together in 2-3 pieces. Before opening, grayish-red, dense. When fully expanded, they are red and crumbly. During the flowering period they begin to grow very quickly. Within a few days they lengthen to 10 cm. Female flowers look like a bud and are located at the ends shoots.

They can be distinguished from a simple bud by a bunch of red stigmas. Very often, male flowers begin to gather dust earlier or later than the stigmas appear on female ones. The fruits are slightly elongated, collected together in clusters of 3-7 pieces. The nuts are enclosed in a wrapper; when fully ripe, it easily opens, releasing them.

The shell is thin, the kernel is of medium size, filling the shell well. The shell color is red, the kernel shell is red with a bronze tint. The taste of the kernels is good. The frost resistance of Sirena hazelnuts is good; the plant can withstand temperatures down to -24 degrees. Flowering is quite early, depending on the climate and weather it can begin in March-April.

The fruits ripen at the end of September - the first half of October. The self-fertility of the variety is low. To get a good harvest of nuts every year, the variety needs a pollinator. Lambert's red-leaved hazelnut is suitable for these purposes. The "Sirena" variety itself is a good pollinator for other varieties of hazelnuts. The plant can be recommended for growing in the sixth climate zone.

How to plant and grow hazelnuts "Sirena"

Planting a nut

For cultivation, you can purchase a ready-made seedling at a fruit nursery or use root shoots from a varietal plant. Important! the root of the planting shoot must be at least 20 cm in length. Cultivation by seed is also acceptable. Nuts are sown in autumn. They grow for two years. After which they are transplanted to a permanent place.

It is necessary to plant the nut in a place well lit by the sun. The land for it should be selected in composition close to forest, fertile, drained, with good moisture. In a small amateur garden, two or three “Sirena” hazelnut trees will be enough; in a large area, they can be used to decorate the space in a natural style, planted on a small slope or near a pond.

You can plant walnut bushes along the border of the site. Planting time is autumn, a month before the cold weather, or spring, before the buds open. Depending on the purpose of planting, you can place plants at a distance of 2-4 meters. 5 kg of rotted manure mixed with 5 kg of leaf soil are added to a planting hole measuring 60 cm by 60 cm.

Add two tablespoons of complex mineral fertilizer. Place the seedling so that the root collar is level with the ground. Cover the roots with soil and compact it. Water the plant with 1-2 buckets of water, mulch the tree trunk area after watering.

During the season it is necessary to carry out loosening 3-4 times soil to a depth of no more than 7 cm. In the dry season, the plant is watered abundantly and the soil underneath is maintained at high moisture. This is important for the plant especially in the first two to three years of life, when its root system is formed and grows.

Care

To grow a healthy hazel tree you need:

  • Apply mineral fertilizers 3-4 times per season
  • remove weeds regularly
  • loosen the ground
  • carry out formative pruning

Formative pruning is carried out from 3-4 years of age. The plant can be formed as a bush, leaving 8-10 strong shoots, or as a tree, leaving one stem. After 20 years, the plant undergoes anti-aging pruning, replacing old trunks with new ones every three to four years.Hazelnut "Sirena" is a long-liver in the garden. It grows in one place for at least 50 years.

Comments

Hazelnuts are very tasty, but they are planted in our gardens quite rarely and you can find hazel in the forest, somewhere near the city. Judging by the description, the “Sirena” variety is not a tree, but a tall shrub, and it will not be difficult to find a place for it on the site for planting.

In our dacha, no one keeps hazelnuts, probably because few people found seedlings at the market. To have enough nuts, it definitely has to be more than one or two shrubs.
