All that remains is to decide on the plant variety, because each has its own pros and cons. It’s worth talking in more detail about one of them, a fairly new strawberry variety called Selva.

Origin of the variety

The strawberry variety Selva was obtained by crossing the varieties Pajero, Brighton and Tufts in 1983 and is considered one of the best and most promising in world selection.

Fruiting period

Selva is early remontant variety, which means you can harvest more than one harvest per season from its beds. Fruits are formed on the mother bush and tendrils; The duration of fruiting is due to the fact that the formation of a fruit bud occurs unevenly over time and extends over the entire season. Selva begins to bear fruit in June - before the usual early varieties.

Already a week after the end of the first wave of the harvest, new inflorescences appear, soon turning into very large, aromatic berries. The first and second harvests come from bushes planted in the fall.Meanwhile, young plants are growing, and soon they will give a new harvest. The berries of the third harvest are the most beautiful and have the best taste. The plants will bear fruit until October with its first frosts.

Disease resistance

A distinctive feature of the Selva variety is its resistance to insects, pests and various diseases. Gray rot practically does not affect the variety, and until the end of the season the leaves remain clean, without spots. However, do not neglect regular inspection of plants and, if necessary, treatment for diseases.

Berries

Selva bears fruit with bright, large, dark red berries with shiny skin. The flesh is almost crispy, and the degree of firmness increases the closer to autumn. The berries have a round-conical shape, their weight ranges from 20 to 60 grams. The berries taste sweet, slightly sour, with a characteristic wild strawberry aroma.

Bush and its decorative properties

The bush of this type of strawberry is semi-spreading, strong, with dark green leaves. It grows up to 50 cm in height. Peduncles tend to be located in the lower part of the bush under the layer of leaves, but not hanging down to the ground. The Selva strawberry bush is superior to many varieties in terms of decorativeness and beauty of fruits, being slightly inferior to them in taste.

Due to the property of increased yielding, the variety is used to produce climbing strawberries.

For this plant grown on a trellis about a meter high. All summer, until August, the plant stretches upward, forming many tendrils. Long vines grow from young developing bushes, completely strewn with white flowers and ripe berries.

To grow a plant as a hanging plant, it is planted in large flowerpots, providing good feeding and abundant watering: it must be taken into account that with this method of growth, nutrition comes from the mother bush.

Features of growing the variety

  • Watering

Although Selva strawberries are unpretentious varieties, when growing you should not neglect some features in their preferences. This variety requires abundant watering, especially during the period of flowering and bud formation - usually the first half of June. The amount of moisture the plant receives during this period will determine the abundance of its fruiting throughout the season.

Selva

  • Illumination

Selva strawberries worth planting in well-lit areas of the site, on a flat or slightly sloping surface. If you plant strawberries on slopes, it is preferable to choose southern or western slopes, where more comfortable growing conditions can be provided.

  • Temperature

The variety does not tolerate hot summers very well - if you do not ensure that the earth does not overheat, the bushes stop developing. In such a situation, in addition to abundant watering, they actively use mulching the space under the bushes with cereal straw or hay. The Selva variety is highly frost-resistant.

The soil for planting should be fertile, from neutral to slightly acidic. Loamy and sandy loam soils are suitable. During the season, it is necessary to constantly apply organic fertilizers and mineral nutrition, since the fruiting of Selva variety plants is almost constant.

Transportation

Everyone knows that growing and harvesting a crop is half the battle, because it still needs to be taken home and processed. Thanks to the elasticity inherent in the fruits of Selva strawberries, they tolerate transportation well and reach the table unharmed.

They say that no ailment is scary for anyone who eats a glass of strawberries during the season. And if strawberries grow on your plot, forget about doctors and medicines!
