Description and characteristics of the variety
The Zhukovskaya cherry variety was bred in the Central Genetic Laboratory named after. I.V. Michurina. The creators of the variety are S.V. Zhukov and E.N. Kharitonova. Working with Michurin breeding material obtained from open pollination varieties of cherries, obtained a variety that is superior in a number of traits to its parent forms.
First of all, it is worth mentioning the appearance of the berries of the Zhukovsky variety: large, weighing from 4 to 7 g, with a dark, almost black color of the pulp, excellent taste and high transportability. The assessment of the taste and external qualities of Zhukovskaya cherries is equal to five points.
The stone is easily separated, the weight of the stone is approximately 7.7% of the weight of the cherry. The sugar content is high, 9.4%. The advantages of the variety include Fruit resistance to shedding.
The trees of this variety are medium-sized, the color of the branches and trunk is brown-red, yellow-silver lentils are noticeable on the bark. The leaf is large, with a long petiole and jagged edges.
Cherries of the Zhukovsky variety give the first harvest in the fourth year of life, over 12 kg of berries can be harvested from a ten-year-old tree, high yields are maintained for 20 years, the maximum yield is 30 kg per tree.
Considering that the variety is self-sterile, a pollinator variety is needed; the Vladimirskaya and Lyubskaya cherry varieties are quite suitable for this.
The advantages of the Zhukovskaya variety include the very high resistance of trees to coccomycosis and ring spot compared to other varieties recommended for cultivation in the following areas:
- Middle Volga
- Central
- Central Chernozem
In addition, the Zhukovskaya cherry variety is distinguished by its friendly return of the harvest and does not crumble, which allows harvesting by mechanization, using special combines. This makes the Zhukovsky variety universal, suitable and attractive for growing on an industrial scale. The disadvantages of the variety include freezing of flower buds in cold winters.
Features of growing the Zhukovsky variety
Selecting a location
When choosing a place to plant Zhukovsky cherries in the garden, you should take into account that the variety is sensitive to sunlight; gentle, well-lit slopes are best suited for it.
You should not plant cherry trees where:
- poor air aeration
- heavy clay soil
- groundwater closer than 2 m
The suitability of a place for growing cherries can be judged by the accompanying plants if plants such as:
- bird cherry
- Rowan
- Linden
- maple
- cereals
- legumes
If these crops grow well, then cherries will also enjoy the place. The best soil for cherries will be light and medium loams with a soil reaction close to neutral.
Planting Zhukovskaya cherry variety
The best time to plant Zhukovskaya cherries is spring, from the moment the soil thaws until the buds open. If the seedling is purchased in the fall, then it is optimal to keep it buried until spring. The best planting material will be annual seedlings 80 cm high with good developed roots, biennial plants up to 110 cm high are also suitable.
In the spring, after the soil has thawed, you need to dig a planting hole of the following dimensions:
- depth 60 cm
- diameter 80 cm
- distance between pits 3.0m
When planting cherries, the planting hole must be filled with fertilizers in the following quantities:
- phosphates - 30 g
- potassium chloride - 20 g
- humus 5 - 6 kg
It is better not to apply nitrogen fertilizers in the year of planting, but to do so in the next season. For heavy clay soils, sand will be required.
If a cherry seedling was purchased with an open root system, then it is necessary to inspect the roots, remove all damaged parts, dip it in a clay mash, place the cherry in the planting hole, and carefully cover the hole with soil.
In the root zone around the seedling, make a small roll of earth and carefully pour 1 - 2 buckets of water over the cherries. If after watering the root collar and roots are exposed, add soil so that the root collar is slightly above ground level.
After watering mulch the soil around the plant with compost or humus.
Cherry Zhukovskaya is a fairly drought-resistant variety, but in certain periods it needs additional watering, primarily during the period of ovary growth in May - June.
In order to prevent moniliosis, it is necessary to spray the trees with Chorus in the spring and spray the trees again after a week.
Growing Zhukovsky cherries is not particularly difficult and can be done by any gardener, regardless of experience.

What a beautiful cherry. This is the first time I have seen this variety. We only have ordinary ones and black-barked ones. But recently, these unpretentious cherries have begun to disappear. And what’s interesting is both old trees and new ones too.
