Growing creeping thyme

Creeping thyme is more popularly known as thyme. Growing creeping thyme is necessary
for different purposes:

  • medicinal plant (for toothache and headache, asthma, diseases of the gastrointestinal tract, etc.);
  • food plant (as a seasoning for fatty main dishes, as an additive to tea);
  • ornamental plant (climbing stem with small lilac flowers - a living decoration of the garden);
  • technical plant (for obtaining essential oil).

It is better to start growing creeping thyme with shoots, which are obtained by dividing the bush. You can sow seeds, but from them the plant develops very slowly.

This perennial unpretentious plant grows in steppe zones. Thyme loves the sun, it is drought-resistant, and it takes root easily. The enemies of thyme are shade and dampness.

Growing creeping thyme does not require much effort. Basic recommendations:

  1. shoots should be planted at a distance of approximately 10 cm from each other;
  2. in the first year there will be only green branches, they need to be weeded periodically;
  3. in the second year the plant will begin to bloom, the branches can be pinned to the ground and sprinkled with a little earth;
  4. you need to thin out and guide the thyme bushes so that they close together and form a mat;
  5. during flowering, the tops of the thyme are cut off and dried (preferably in the shade);
  6. After 4-5 years, the thyme beds will need to be thinned out.

Thus, growing creeping thyme is not a labor-intensive process at all, but this fragrant herb will last for more than one year.

This year I want to plant herbs on the balcony for use in cooking. I planned to grow thyme too. But after reading this article, I realized that nothing would work. It is still better to plant thyme in open ground.
