Caring for a rolled lawn, in spring, summer, autumn and winter, when is it better to lay a lawn, how to restore

roll lawn care

When landscaping a site, they often resort to purchasing a ready-made roll lawn.

If you plan to do all the work yourself, a lot of questions will inevitably arise about when it is best to lay it, how to do it correctly, and you will also need to clarify what care for the rolled lawn will need to be carried out throughout the year.

When is the best time to lay rolled lawn?

The time required for laying rolled turf is limited by weather conditions and the availability of the material itself for sale. It would seem that the most suitable time is early spring, but even during this period it is unlikely that it will be possible to begin improving the territory.

roll lawn care

Although from the point of view of biological processes spring work is welcome, the problem will be the inability to purchase the material itself.

In early spring, there are simply no lawns for sale, the reasons are not difficult to guess: winter frosts do not have the most favorable effect on the appearance of the green covering; the grass cover partially or completely dies as a result of freezing. His appearance becomes unpresentable.

To restore an attractive appearance, growers will need to thoroughly comb out the dried blades of grass; this is usually done in March. During this period, young shoots have not yet appeared, and old ones are combed out quite easily.

Next, it will take time to be completely covered with greenery; during this period they produce fertilization. When the grass becomes tall enough, it is carefully cut. Only after these procedures the coating is considered ready for sale.

If we take into account the duration of winter in the conditions of the Middle Zone, and the duration of the recovery period, which is from one to one and a half months, then the beginning of implementation usually coincides with the beginning of May. After a warm winter or early spring, turf sales may begin in mid-April.

characteristics of a quality lawn

Of course, if you can’t wait to green up your lawn urgently, you can find a manufacturer who will sell the covering at an earlier date.

But it is unlikely that such a lawn will have a sufficiently attractive appearance.

Experts recommend planning work for May; if the area for laying is carefully prepared, then it will take one or two days to turn the area into an emerald lawn.

Summer is considered a suitable time for work. The grass grows actively during this period, the purchased coating will look perfect. Of course, if the temperature outside is above + 30 C, then it is advisable to carry out the work in a short time.Rolls must be spread out immediately after purchase, then thoroughly filled with water.

You can also plan installation for the fall, since the heat has subsided, it will be easier for the workers and it will be easier for the grass to take root. You can lay the covering all autumn, before the onset of frost.

Rolled lawn care by month

You cannot assume that even a properly laid lawn will please your eyes throughout the summer and you won’t need to do anything. Of course, like any other garden plants, the grass will require care and care, attentive attitude to her condition, adequate actions in case of problems.

The type of coverage will depend on:

  • how much proper care is provided,
  • Are preventive measures being taken?
  • Do you know decorating techniques?

Attentive attention to the condition of the grass, as well as constant competent care, will maximize its service life and maintain a pleasant appearance.

It is more convenient to consider the rules of care not by month, but by season. This is what we are going to do next.

Let's watch a video about caring for a rolled lawn throughout the year:

Lawn care in spring

After the snow cover melts, the growing season begins, therefore, the plants will need additional nutrition. Fertilizing will help replenish the reserves of nutrients in the soil. It is produced when systematic night frosts cease to be observed.

It is recommended to use special, complex fertilizers with a predominance of nitrogen. It is the nitrogen component that ensures active regeneration.

The best time is while the grass has not yet grown, otherwise you will need to monitor it to ensure that the grass does not burn out due to exposure to sunlight.

You should remember the rules for applying fertilizers:

  • the soil must be moist;
  • the best time to apply is before watering, in which case the fertilizers will be fully absorbed;
  • You can apply fertilizers manually, but it is necessary to control the uniformity of application;
  • It will be enough to apply 5 g of nitrogen fertilizers per square meter of area.

Lawn scarification, i.e. combing it is done in order to remove the remains of dry grass and moss if it appears.

lawn scarification

The procedure is mandatory, because a layer of dry grass 1 cm thick already disrupts the normal supply of air, water, and nutrients. Scarification is carried out in the spring; it is done with caution, because... sudden movements can be traumatic for plants. Autumn scarification is carried out immediately before sowing grass and fertilizing the soil.

Scarification is performed manually using a fan rake.

lawn aeration

An equally useful procedure is aeration; it is carried out after scarification and fertilization. As a result, the supply of oxygen to the roots of plants improves and the quality of soil moisture improves.

The procedure involves making holes of different diameters in the ground. For work, special tools or even ordinary forks are used, punctures are made to a depth of 8-10 cm, the distance between them should be about 15 cm.

The greatest effectiveness of the procedure is obtained in wetlands covered with mosses, as well as in those places where bald spots have formed as a result of trampling.

Summer care, when to mow for the first time

You can start mowing about a week after installation. The grass will grow back during this period, but since it was crushed during transportation, the lawn will turn out shaggy and its surface will not be smooth.

It is recommended to mow only the top 2-3 cm of grass blades; the remaining vegetation should be at least 6-8 cm high.

The next mowings are carried out as the grass grows, so that the lawn has an ideal appearance; mowing is done once every 7-10 days. This will ensure the penetration of sunlight to the lower part of the stems, the green color of the grass will become more intense, and the lower leaves will stop turning yellow.

lawn mowing

When performing a haircut, follow these rules:

  • cutting plants too low can lead to thinning of green space;
  • the grass is cut only when it is dry from the dew;
  • if each time you cut in a direction perpendicular to the previous one, the mowing will be more uniform;
  • Grass clippings should be removed from the lawn.

Fertilizer and watering rates

For summer feeding, special fertilizers are used.

The ideal composition of the nutrient mixture per square meter of area:

  • as before, the most relevant nitrogen component is: 10 g per 1 sq. m.;
  • phosphorus will require 3 g per sq.m;
  • potassium - 5 g.

Starting from July, the composition of the feeding changes slightly, with the same nitrogen component, 2.5 g of potassium is required, as well as phosphorus.

application of mineral fertilizers

In summer, when the likelihood of drought increases, additional watering will be required.

Signs that can help you determine if your lawn is dry:

  • soil that has dried to a depth of 10 cm;
  • dull grass that has lost its elasticity.

When watering you should:

  • use the irrigation method rather than the jet method;
  • prevent the accumulation of water on the surface of the lawn, eliminate the possibility of waterlogging;
  • the norm of introduced moisture per 1 square meter of area is 25 liters, natural precipitation should also be taken into account;
  • the best time for watering is morning or evening, water evaporation at this time is minimal;
  • Watering should only be done when the top layer of soil dries out;
  • the frequency of watering should be adjusted depending on the type of soil and weather conditions;
  • Watering is considered sufficient when moisture penetrates into the soil to a depth of no less than 15 cm.

Frequent watering with a small amount of water is not recommended; it leads to improper, superficial growth of the root system.

The lawn needs more intensive watering after reseeding the grass and before emergence, after mowing, and during intensive growth of greenery.

How to fight weeds

It is possible that they will periodically appear among the grass. The first and most successful option for their destruction would be systematic mowing of the grass on the lawn - weeds do not tolerate such procedures well.

weed removal

On young lawns, the method of mechanical removal of weeds is used, i.e. They are dug out using a spatula or other devices; this option is effective, but quite labor-intensive.

If a large number of weeds appear, experts recommend using herbicides. Properly selected, they cause virtually no harm to lawn grass, but they completely destroy weeds.

Herbicides can have a selective or continuous effect, and are produced in liquid or powder form.

application of herbicides against weeds on the lawn

Handling herbicides must be careful, and work should be done using personal protective equipment. It is best to choose a quiet, windless day. It is not recommended to apply before rain. Powdered herbicides are applied to moist soil.

Features of autumn care

To ensure your lawn recovers quickly after winter, the following fall activities are recommended to prepare your lawn for the winter:

  • To increase the frost resistance of grasses, it is advisable to apply fertilizers containing phosphorus and potassium components; nitrogen-containing ones should be abandoned.
  • At the end of September and beginning of October, systematic haircuts should be stopped. The height of the grass during this period should be approximately 4-6 cm. It is recommended to systematically clear the lawn of fallen leaves.

For preventive purposes, autumn treatment should be carried out aimed at combating fungal infections. Fundazol can be recommended as a fairly effective remedy.

The last haircut before winter can be done no later than the end of October.

Organization of wintering

In winter, the lawn also requires proper, if not care, then at least treatment:

  • it is forbidden to trample on the territory where grass grows; with the onset of spring, in trampled places the grass will turn yellow;
  • The snow cover on the lawn should not be disturbed, but the formation of snowdrifts or icing should not be allowed; overcompaction of the snow cover will lead to a lack of oxygen. The ice crust must be removed.

How to restore rolled lawn

To cope with the task of restoration, you will need to determine the reasons why the growth of grasses has slowed down or bald spots have appeared.

Perhaps it:

  • poor drainage, causing water stagnation and moss growth;
  • systematic walking on some part of the lawn;
  • lack of moisture or uneven watering;
  • presence of weeds;
  • excess or lack of fertilizers, uneven application;
  • lack of systematic haircuts.

Having analyzed the condition and determined the cause, you can begin to correct your mistakes. If you are not sure of the right decision, it is better to consult a specialist.

Among the advantages of roll coating, it should be noted the possibility of restoring individual areas, using the type of patches.

watering the lawn

If the lawn is too dry, you will need to carefully treat it with a metal rake, add growth stimulants, and water it generously.

When organizing automatic watering, examine whether all areas will receive a sufficient amount of water.

If the restoration of grass cover is slow, it may be necessary to reseed grass in certain areas.

If it is necessary to quickly repair green spaces, they resort to replacing a section of turf. In this case, the grass should be used of the same type that is sown with the main lawn - so that the patch does not stand out against the general green background.

Sometimes it is rational to emphasize the patch by giving it the shape of a star, rhombus, or circle. Such inserts will not only not spoil the lawn, but will also serve as a color for it.

If the loss of decorativeness lies in unsystematic cutting, i.e. the grass is clearly overgrown, then it should be cut in several steps, with each cutting the level of the lawn mower decreases. It will not be possible to “clean-mow” vegetation that is too tall; it is very difficult to achieve an excellent result.

To save yourself from unnecessary problems, mow your lawn at least once every two weeks.
