History of origin and geography of growth
The Pleven resistant grape is the product of the work of Bulgarian breeders and was obtained at the Breeding Institute of the city of Plevna, hence the name of the variety. It was obtained by crossing grape varieties such as Pleven and Vilar Blanc. Many gardeners know it under the names Phenomena and Augustine and V25/20.
Thanks to its characteristics, it has become widespread in Russia. Most of all for this climate grape variety The southern and central regions of the country are suitable; further spread is hampered by severe frosts characteristic of the northern and northeastern regions.
However, residents of Siberia can regularly see Pleven grapes on the shelves of their stores, because thanks to their excellent transportability, they become available in any corner of the country.
Main characteristics of the variety
The main characteristics of Pleven grapes include:
- Productivity
- Frost resistance
- Unpretentiousness
- Survival rate
- Reliability
This table grape variety has very good characteristics, which makes it very popular among winegrowers and gardeners. Distinguished by its high yield, unpretentiousness and high degree of reliability, this grape is like no other suitable for beginners who are taking their first steps along the road of viticulture.
According to the ripening period, Pleven is classified as an early variety. Depending on the climate, the harvest can be harvested as early as the first to third ten days of August. Moreover, if you were unable to remove the grapes on time, nothing bad will happen; the grape clusters can hang on the vine for 2 - 3 weeks from the moment of ripening without compromising their marketability and taste.
The flower is bisexual, which makes it a good pollinator for other varieties with female flowering. Bad weather does not affect the quality of pollination; unlike other varieties, it is not susceptible to peas.
In some of its characteristics, Pleven resembles Moldova, also being tall, it can be used for decorative purposes and on a gazebo. The survival rate of seedlings reaches 80-90 percent.
Thanks to high frost resistance (-25) grapes do not need to be harvested and insulated for the winter, which is another advantage of this variety. Productivity reaches 140 centners per hectare or 60 kilograms per bush, this makes it a fairly profitable crop. With proper care, one brush can weigh 500 - 1000 grams, and the weight of one berry reaches 8 grams.
Pleven can be called a moisture-loving variety. Moreover, even in rainy summers, the sugar content reaches 20 percent. The taste of the berries is sweet and sour, and, thanks to the medium looseness of the cluster, all the berries ripen, and the number of rotten ones is reduced to a minimum.
Ripe Pleven grapes acquire a yellow or amber hue. The berries measure approximately 2 by 3 cm and have an oblong-round shape. Its attractive presentation and pleasant taste make it popular among both buyers and sellers.
The main disadvantages of this variety
As with everything in this world, this variety has a number of disadvantages, which also need to be discussed.
First of all, it is worth mentioning frost resistance, which in this grape variety, although above average, is not sufficient to expand the geography of growth. However, it was bred in Bulgaria and is most suitable for the climate of this country.
The second disadvantage can be called insufficient disease resistance. Although it is also worth making a comparison here. Compared to other grape varieties, Pleven has above average resistance, but it is imperative to take measures against fungal diseases (Oidium, Mildew) to which it is susceptible.
Not resistant to Phylloxera, but not predisposed to Gray rot. Infection with grapeworm leads to rotting of the berries. Heavy rainfall can also cause the berries to burst and rot.
So, Pleven grapes are susceptible to:
- Oidium
- Mildew
- Phylloxera
- Grasshopper
- Wasps
Many winegrowers can add to the disadvantages the presence of seeds and an insufficiently refined taste, but here everyone has their own point of view.
All the shortcomings found can be attributed rather to a conditional category, because if you start comparing Pleven grapes with other varieties, it will immediately become clear that they have an even greater number of weak points, and what seemed like a huge disadvantage turns into a small nuance.
Having carried out a comparative analysis of the main characteristics of the Pleven resistant variety, geography of distribution and susceptibility to diseases, we can conclude that this variety is ideal for cultivation in your garden, gives excellent yields and does not require Herculean efforts to care for it.

The grape variety Pleven resistant or Augustine is one of our family’s favorite varieties.
The grapes are very unpretentious and are practically not susceptible to disease. The advantage of this variety is that, under favorable conditions, starting from mid-August, you can already enjoy very tasty and aromatic berries. Plus, Augustine is a very good pollinator for vineyards with functionally female flowers.
