Time to plant onion sets

You can grow any onion in your summer cottage; if you grow onions from seeds, then in the first year you can get small onions - sets. These bulbs are removed from the garden bed and stored until spring. But most often, summer residents prefer to buy ready-made onion sets, since storing these small onions is not very easy, and the process of collecting them and subsequent preparation for storage is quite labor-intensive.

The time of planting onion sets coincides with the end of frost, small onions are planted in beds, most often onions are used to obtain green feathers, if the summer resident’s goal is to grow onions for seeds, then the feather is not cut off, but a large onion is grown - a turnip. At the end of August, onions are collected and stored for food, or for further obtaining seeds from such bulbs.

Although the time for planting onion sets is spring, the soil for it begins to be prepared in the fall. Onions grow well in beds where zucchini, pumpkins, peas, and tomatoes previously grew. But in the beds after garlic and carrots, onions will grow poorly. You should remember this when choosing a bed for this plant. The soil is first fertilized with manure, compost, and phosphorus or potassium fertilizers can be applied at the rate of 30 grams per 1 square meter. Onions love moderately moist loamy soils. When choosing onion sets for planting, you need to know that small onions usually produce small onions, and large ones most often produce shoots.

Before planting onion sets in the beds, the bulbs must be prepared for planting; to do this, they are placed in hot water for 2 minutes, and then in cold water for 1 minute. After which the bulbs are soaked in a solution of nitroammophoska for 10 hours. This treatment will avoid fungal diseases of onions.
