Hyacinths

After a long, harsh winter, nothing pleases the eye more than the first spring flowers. Hyacinths are rightfully one of the most beautiful primroses. Their popularity goes back centuries. Already in the 15th century, the plant was widely cultivated in European countries.

Over several centuries, thousands of varieties of these flowers have been bred. Some of them were forgotten, while others grew in popularity. Let's try to find out when to plant hyacinths and some rules growing these flowers.

When is the main time to plant hyacinths?

In amateur floriculture, the main method of propagating hyacinths is by planting bulbs. The main planting time is autumn. A more precise date is determined by the climate and weather in the region.

When to plant hyacinths in the fall

The main task of the gardener when planting bulbs in autumn is to accurately calculate the timing of planting them in open ground. In regions with a mild climate and a late onset of cold weather, hyacinths can be planted at the very end of autumn. In areas with a temperate climate, it is necessary to calculate the planting time so that the bulb takes root before the soil freezes, but does not begin to grow.

Depending on the climate and weather, the bulbs are planted in the ground in the third ten days of September - in the first ten days of October. If soil freezing occurs in the region on November 5-10, then taking into account the fact that on average it takes at least 3-5 weeks to root a bulb, landing bulbs begin in the last week of September and continue until October 10 - 12.

If frosts come a week or two earlier than planned, then you shouldn’t despair. Most likely, there will be a couple of thaws ahead and the bulbs will still have time to grow roots. In the case when the warm period has dragged on and the hyacinth has begun to grow, the bed needs to be covered with hay, spruce branches, and foliage.

In order not to make a mistake with the planting time, you can plant hyacinths in three stages with an interval of 5-7 days. This technique, if successful, will allow you to have a longer-blooming flowerbed of beautiful flowers. If not all planting times are successful, then only part of the bulbs may die.

The rest will still take root and germinate in the spring. If it was not possible to plant in the fall, for example, the planting material was received late, then all is not lost for hyacinths. You can plant them in the spring.

Is it possible to plant hyacinths in spring, timing

For spring planting of bulbs in open ground, it is advisable to carry out all site preparation work in the fall. Then, immediately after the soil thaws, you can begin planting the bulbs in spring. To protect the prepared area from destruction and leaching of nutrients, the bed can be covered with film.

As soon as the earth thaws by 15 - 20 cm and warms up to + 5 + 8 degrees, then bulbs can be transplanted into the garden. To make this happen faster, you need to choose a well-lit area, preferably a small southern slope. For most regions with a temperate climate, spring planting of hyacinths is carried out from the second to third ten days of April.

If the bed is not ready in the fall, then in the spring it should be dug up and fertilized two weeks before planting the bulbs.

Thus, if the soil has thawed to the depth of a shovel by April 15 - 20, then hyacinths can be planted in open ground in the first week of May. Of course, with such a late planting, there is a high probability that the bulb will begin to germinate. In this case, it can be placed in a small bowl with soil and transplanted into a garden bed as soon as possible.

Important! According to reviews from experienced flower growers, many of them do not dig up hyacinth bulbs for several seasons, receiving earlier flowering of these plants every spring. Although improper care and untimely planting can negatively affect the shape and splendor of the inflorescence.

Requirements for soil and planting site

For these flowers, a well-lit place, protected from wind and draft, with loose, water-permeable soil, is suitable. soil. A slight slope is desirable. This will ensure good drainage of excess water. The soil should be well fertilized with rotted humus. However, introducing fresh humus is unacceptable. The acidity level should be neutral or slightly acidic.

Preparing for landing

The planting area is prepared in advance. During autumn planting at the end of August, the site is dug up with one and a half shovels. At the same time add:

  • humus 10 kg per sq. m
  • superphosphate 3-4 tbsp. l. per sq. m
  • potassium sulfate 1-2 tbsp. l. per sq. m
  • magnesium sulfate 1 tbsp. l per sq. m

It is acceptable to replace potassium sulfate with a glass of wood ash, and magnesium with a glass of dolomite flour.Sandy soils require an increase in mineral fertilizers by one and a half times.

Planting and care

Under landing digging holes. Their depth is determined by the size of the bulb. If it is large, then the depth of the hole is 18 - 20 cm. Smaller specimens are embedded to a depth of 8 - 10 cm. A 3 cm layer of sand is poured onto the bottom of the hole. The bulb is lightly pressed against it and covered with soil. If the soil is too dry, water the planting site. With the onset of stable cold weather, the bed is covered with a layer of foliage, peat and spruce branches.

As soon as the first shoots appear, hyacinths are fed with ammonium nitrate. Application rate - 30 g per square meter. m. At the stage of bud formation, add per 1 sq. m:

  • 2 tbsp. l. superphosphate
  • 1 tbsp. ammonium nitrate
  • 1 tbsp. potassium chloride

Fertilizers are applied by scattering them in the furrows between the rows of plants. Then they are lightly covered with soil. If the weather is dry, then hyacinths need watering during the flowering period and two weeks after it. As soon as the leaves of the hyacinths dry out, their bulbs are dug up.

This usually happens in the second half of July. There should be approximately three months left for storage before planting. After being removed from the soil, the bulbs are inspected, washed and dried. They are stored in boxes, laid in two layers.

First month temperature storage should be + 25, and in the second month it is lowered to + 17 degrees. A few days before planting, the temperature should be reduced to the air temperature during the given period. If all the recommendations are followed, then in the spring elegant flowers with a subtle, refined aroma will appear on the site.
