How to propagate ficus: propagation methods

How to propagate ficus? Most often, this procedure is carried out using cuttings from stems and leaves. If you place them in water, they will take root after a while. But when breeding, you should take into account the time of year and other nuances. In some cases, cuttings take root in the ground. To do this, you need to wash them from the juice, dry them, and it is better to place the soil where they were placed in warm places.

Features of reproduction
There are 3 types of ficus:
- Ampelny
- artisanal
- Tree-like
Reproduction of any species has some differences, although growing ficus at home is not difficult. It is easier to propagate the ampelous type of plant because it takes root easily. Other types require careful care and a long time.
There are 3 reproduction options:
- Cuttings
- Cutting with leaf
- Air layering
Experts note some mandatory conditions that must be met, regardless of the type of reproduction:
- It is worth doing the procedure when it is warm. Spring or summer time is good for this.
- Young plants do not respond well to ultraviolet radiation, so direct sunlight should be avoided.
- The place where the cut from the cutting remains should be washed with water so that no juice appears. The plant is placed in fresh air for a short time, this will allow the cuts to dry out quickly.
- When carrying out cuttings, you need to take into account the fact that young shoots cannot take root.
- Cuttings have characteristics tree plant species. The cut is made at the top of the trunk, and sections of the stem are also used.
Cuttings

For planting, cuttings are used that are 15-17 cm long. To do this, choose a spring day to obtain such shoots. The required distance is measured from the top, leaving one centimeter left to the first node. Next, using a sharp knife, cut the stalk at an angle. All leaves are eliminated.
When propagating large-leaved ficus, the leaves are optionally left for rooting. Next, the cuttings are placed in water. You should make a small greenhouse that will help roots appear quickly. They do not germinate quickly, it will take 2-5 weeks. As soon as small leaves appear on the cutting, it is ready to be transplanted into a separate pot. Therefore, after this, the plant is planted where it should take root.
Using cuttings with leaves
As already mentioned, there is propagation by leaf. This shoot should also be cut at an angle. In this case, the cut is located at the very node of the plant trunk. You should first prepare the soil into which the ficus cuttings are immersed to the base of the leaf. But the sheet itself is rolled up and fixed in a twisted state; for this you can use ordinary thread.
Care in the future does not differ from care when propagating by cuttings. You should expect 3-4 weeks for the plant to take root. It depends on the type of ficus.
Using air layering

For tree-like plant species, for example, for the lyre-shaped ficus, propagation is used using air layering. There are situations when the ficus has grown very long, and the leaves are located exclusively at the top. In this case it is shortened.
After some time, the crown of the plant becomes thicker as side shoots grow. And from this you can get another plant. Before cutting the shoot, it should be rooted. For this purpose, air layering is used.
To do this, the required height is noted, all leaves on the trunk are removed under the bud. Next, a circular incision is made, directed upward. You can also remove a small strip of bark; this should be done under the layering. A piece of wood is placed into the resulting cut; it can be a match.
The area where the incision was made is wrapped with film. It is well secured on the sides and bandaged at the bottom. It is recommended to put wet moss in the bag.
The film is tied at the top so that there is air inside. After 3 weeks, roots appear. After all operations are completed, the moss is overgrown with roots, and the top is separated from the main ficus. After this, it is placed in a separate pot.
There are also various secrets propagation of ficus. The number of leaves on the shoot corresponds to how many cuttings can be obtained. It should have only one leaf, but the eye should be intact. When the cutting is cut, it should be immediately placed in warm water. This will stop the plant's liquid from appearing. To ensure that the cuttings take root well, a cut is made.
For soft wood, one cut is made; for hard wood, a cross-shaped cut is made. When rooting of cuttings occurs, the soil should be warm, it should be covered with a jar or plastic bag. There are also phytohormones that are used for better and faster rooting.
Ficus propagation is a simple procedure. The main thing is to adhere to basic rules.

Personally, I was only able to grow and propagate large-leaf ficus. I coped with flying colors. He is unpretentious. But having bought a ficus with small leaves, I had problems. I haven't been getting along with them for 7 years now. There are 3 of these ficuses in different rooms in the apartment. They just don't want to grow. They sit at 30-40 cm for more than 5 years. Care, watering and pots are in order.
I have several types of ficus. All of them were grown by me from cuttings. I didn’t experience any difficulties - at first I kept the cuttings in water, and when the roots appeared, I planted them in the ground under a glass jar.
