A bed for cucumbers, not simple - warm

Cucumber bed - that's the main secret. And not a simple garden bed, but warm. Cucumbers - thermophilic, they will not grow at temperatures up to 15 degrees Celsius, so you should not plant them before the end of May or beginning of June, or sow them in greenhouses, but it’s easier - prepare a warm bed.

How to prepare a warm bed for cucumbers?

  • the bed is prepared in early spring or autumn;
  • dig a trench 50 cm deep;
  • lay wood logs across the trench (this can be any wood waste, pruned apple tree branches, tree roots);
  • cover the sides of the trench with sawdust and twigs;
  • lay inverted turf on top;
  • compact well;
  • the row can be edged with a wooden box, but its walls must be inclined;
  • on top of the turf - a tree leaf and soil;
  • the soil must be mixed with compost in a 1:1 ratio;

How does a warm bed work?

When rotting, wood releases methane (respectively - heat), microorganisms multiply well in such an environment. They oxidize methane to carbon dioxide, and the plant feeds on it.
Such a bed for cucumbers can “work” for up to 10 years.

In such a bed you can grow not just cucumbers, but also radishes, lettuce, dill, asters, cauliflower, pumpkin, zucchini. Experienced gardeners advise sowing cucumbers on the twentieth of April. With the help of a garden bed, plants can easily withstand temperature drops of even up to 5 degrees.
