Growing salvia from seeds

growing salvia from seeds

Some special knowledge and effort growing salvia from seeds does not require. But still, each plant has its own characteristics.

When growing salvia, you should take into account that the seeds will need to be sown in February-March. This must be done so that your plants bloom as early as possible. Salvia begins to bloom only 3.5-4 months after planting. Therefore, seedlings from seeds need to be grown in advance.

Salvia does not have any special requirements for the soil for planting, the main thing is that it is light and nutritious. Salvia seeds are very small, so you should not bury them deeply in the ground. It is enough to scatter them over the surface and sprinkle a layer of earth on top.

After planting, spray the soil in the planting containers with warm water from a spray bottle. To create greenhouse-like conditions, cover the containers with glass or polyethylene. Next is waiting for seedlings.

As soon as the first shoots appear, the boxes should be placed in a well-lit place or additional lighting should be provided with lamps. Daylight hours for seedlings should be at least 12 hours a day.

Salvia seedlings should be watered carefully, avoiding severe drying of the soil and its excessive waterlogging. Two weeks after germination, salvia can already be fertilized.

After a pair of true leaves grow on the plants, they must be picked into separate containers.

As you may have noticed, growing salvia from seeds to seedlings is similar to growing many other garden flowers; all the techniques are probably familiar to you.Transplant the resulting seedlings into open ground when the threat of frost has passed.
