Growing onions and turnips and feathers

April - early May is the time when it’s time to start growing onions, turnips, and feathers. Onions are a fairly frost-resistant plant, which is why you can start planting them a little earlier than more heat-loving vegetables. In addition, early planting has a beneficial effect on the development of the root system.

Soil preparation

It is best if the soil in the garden is prepared in the fall. It is not necessary to use mineral fertilizers; it is enough to add a bucket of humus per linear meter and dig up the ground, forming narrow beds. In spring, the soil needs to be loosened, moistened, and ash added.

Preparing onions for planting

It is advisable to start growing onions, turnips, and feathers by soaking the planting material. To do this, you need to prepare a dark solution of potassium permanganate (5 g per 5 liters of water). It is advisable to heat the solution to 50-60°. The onion must be left in the solution for 12 hours. After this procedure, onion roots germinate faster. For onions grown for feathers, it is necessary to cut off the top “at the shoulders”; this will allow you to get a thicker bunch.

Landing in the ground

In the prepared bed, you need to make a furrow with a flat cutter, water it thoroughly and immediately plant the bulbs in the dirt. For growing onions, a gap of 8 - 10 cm is desirable, and for growing feathers, the bulbs can be planted end to end. If you add a tablespoon of dried tea leaves under each bulb, you can prevent many diseases. The grooves are sprinkled with humus on top.

Caring for onions is easy. It is enough to water, weed and loosen the beds on time. It is imperative to loosen and more often. In addition, growing onions requires additional watering, especially at the initial stage.

To avoid such a nuisance as onion fly damage, you need to water the beds twice with a solution of table salt (1 cup of salt per bucket of water). The procedure must be carried out carefully, trying not to get it on the pen.

Comments

I am an inexperienced gardener, I tried to grow onions using feathers, but it didn’t work out very well. But I had no idea that before planting it should be soaked in potassium permanganate, and even in hot water. There is still a lot to learn.

I grow onions for harvest all year round, and in winter at home. There is nothing complicated, the onion will germinate even if you just plant it in water. I have never soaked it anywhere or anything, so it seems to me that this is a matter of taste and the ability to come up with problems for yourself. From a regular set, the feather is fully formed in 15-20 days, so I have fresh greens in my house all year round.

In my opinion, onion yield is most influenced by the selection of seed material. I buy onions for planting from a friend, and this almost always allows me to get good results. As far as I know, he does not treat the bulbs with any special composition.

It is very easy to grow onions using feathers at home. There is a way to get a harvest without soil and without pots. Pour wood shavings into the bottom of a regular bag, add water, and plant the bulbs on it. Moisten the chips periodically.
