Cactus

Cactus is an original representative of the flora of South American deserts. Harsh natural conditions have made it extremely hardy, it can withstand drought and sudden changes in temperature.

Another variety, forest cacti, come from tropical jungles; naturally, they are radically different from desert ones and require completely different conditions for normal development.

Once you decide to get a cactus, ask what species it is. Improper care can cause death.

The most common types of cacti that are grown at home:

  • dwarf hybrid
  • desert - chamecereus, echinocereus, espola, echonopsis, capricorn astrophytum, prickly pear
  • forest - zygocactus Christmas tree, epiphyllum, ripsalidopsis

Growing cacti

Don't forget that desert plants will need good lighting; it is best to place them on southern or eastern windows. Forest dwellers, on the contrary, require keeping them in partial shade, in a room with high air humidity. They can be placed on western and northern windows.

Winter time for desert inhabitants is a period of rest, i.e. It is better to keep them in a cool room; the lighting requirements are significantly reduced.

Regarding watering, then they should not be performed more than 2 times a week in the summer, 2-3 times a month throughout the entire autumn-winter season. The water should be warm and settled; plants respond well to rain and melt water.

Replant not often, as the pot fills with overgrown roots. For adult plants, 1 transplant every 2-3 years is sufficient.

How to care for cacti so that they bloom

This question arises often, no matter how much a florist loves the beautiful thorns on the windowsill, deep down he dreams of admiring not only the bizarre shapes, thorns and numerous children, but also amazing flowers.

Note that even in indoor conditions, cacti can bloom systematically; for this you will need to follow simple recommendations:

  • use a loose substrate for planting, it will prevent putrefactive diseases of the roots
  • Fertilizers should be applied only during the growing season
  • organize a dormant period for the plant
  • avoid changing the location of the dislocation; you also cannot rotate it around its own axis
  • on hot summer days, plants should be sprayed with water dust, the water should be settled and warm

Cactus propagation

In practice, they often resort to reproduction by children. Rooting them is quite simple. To obtain rare varieties, they practice growing cacti from seeds; it is quite possible to obtain the result at home.

This will require the construction of a greenhouse, provision of light conditions and, of course, careful care of the babies.
