Planting lavender is a snap!

Lavender, having numerous advantages, has become a very popular crop, grown not only on an industrial scale, but also in garden plots.

In France, endless lavender fields have not surprised anyone for a long time, but in other European countries you can rarely find a private garden in which these lovely plants do not grow. Therefore, I would like to tell the residents of our central zone that planting lavender is not at all difficult, and the beauty of these plants is worth it.

Lavender belongs to the perennial plants of the Lamiaceae family and is completely unpretentious to grow. This plant exhibits remarkable endurance due to its mountain origin. The main conditions for favorable growth of lavender are well-drained soil, rich in lime, a warm and well-lit place in your garden.

Lavender can be propagated in 2 ways: by dividing the rhizome of the bush or by seeds. Planting lavender with seeds is a more labor-intensive process, because... back in January, the seeds must be placed in the soil and the containers removed to a cool place for a month. After such a cold period, the containers are transferred to a warm place and the seeds are germinated.

The resulting seedlings are transplanted into the ground only in June, when frosts are absolutely excluded. In the first year of the bush’s life, lavender will delight you with flowering. But there is also a subtlety here - flowers should be plucked from one-year-old plants so that the plant’s energy is not wasted on flowering, but goes towards better rooting.

The climate of our region is quite unpredictable, so in winter lavender bushes should be cut back to the woody part of the stems and covered.
