Growing climbing strawberries: myth or reality?

climbing strawberry

Who among us has not seen an advertisement in a popular newspaper with an attractive picture where climbing strawberries grow beautifully and bear fruit in a special flowerpot right next to the house; moreover, it is stated that they are remontant, produce fruit from June to November and are frost-resistant. This advertisement suggests starting to grow climbing strawberries by purchasing very expensive seedlings. As you know, gardeners are passionate people, and many of them ordered these seedlings. As a result, the seedlings received by mail either died completely or turned out to be bushes of the most ordinary garden strawberries, of an unknown variety, but in no way climbing.

It turns out that climbing strawberries are a myth, a term invented by scammers to lure more money from gullible gardeners? In principle, this is true, but growing climbing strawberries is still possible. To do this, you do not need to purchase unknown miracle seedlings from scammers. Plant remontant strawberries that can bear fruit on runners, such as Sakhalin, Ada, Herzberg, San Rival, Peikrowa Auslese or others, in a hanging pot or tall flowerpot. Allow the plant to grow freely, occasionally adjusting the number of tendrils.

As a result, you will get approximately the same picture as in the notorious advertisement, however, there will be fewer berries on it. By growing strawberries in this way, you can hardly count on large harvests; rather, this structure will serve as a decoration for the garden. It should also be remembered that such structures are unlikely to survive our harsh winters. This beauty will have to be created again every spring.
