Cyclamen, propagation by leaves, children, seeds and rosettes, general recommendations

propagation of cyclamen by foxes

Cyclamen is a very beautiful house plant that has long been very popular among amateurs and professionals. The flower blooms even in winter, creating warmth and comfort in the house.

However, if proper care is not provided, the leaves will begin to darken and turn yellow, and the plant will lose its presentability. In this article you will learn how cyclamen is propagated by leaves, tubers and seeds, and what is needed for this.

General recommendations

Any type of reproduction requires compliance with general rules, here is a list of them:

  • This procedure should be carried out only during the plant's dormant period.
  • When purchasing seeds or tubers, it is important to make sure that they are not spoiled and purchase from specialized stores.
  • Each species reproduces in its own way; pups, rosettes, seeds and tubers are used for propagation.
  • When planting seed, the soil moisture level must be observed.
  • Feeding is carried out only after the first leaves have pecked.

If you follow these recommendations, the whole procedure will not cause difficulties; even a beginner can cope with it.

Reproduction of European cyclamen

European cyclamen (second name alpine) reproduces easily. You can use all options for this, for example, propagation by rosettes, tuber division and seeds.

Seeds can be purchased or collected independently from an adult plant. Ideally, the seed should be orange. To ensure that the soil has moderate moisture, it is worth purchasing soil in the store; soil intended for violets is good.

The finished soil is poured into containers, then furrows are made and watering is carried out. Seeds should be planted at a distance of three to four centimeters from each other. The seeds are covered with the same soil on top, not in a thick layer.

Now it is important to properly care for cyclamen. The plant needs to be watered and the pot should be placed in a dark place. Watering must be sure; excessive moisture and drying out can lead to poor germination.

If everything is done correctly, the first sprouts will appear in 30 days.

Now the soil needs to be fertilized with special minerals. When leaves appear, the seedlings dive.

After six months, the flowers are ready for transplanting; young shoots should be covered 2/3 with soil. After 6 months the cyclamen will bloom.

Propagation by a tuber, this option should be carried out when the flower becomes an adult and has a large and healthy root system.

To divide the tuber, use a sharp, disinfected knife; after cutting, each part must have a root and a shoot. Ideally, one tuber is divided into two parts, no more.

After the manipulation, treat the sections with activated carbon and leave them for a day to dry.

Now plant the cuttings in the prepared soil. You need to be careful with watering; excess moisture will lead to rotting of the tuber and death of the plant.

Reproduction by rosettes - adult flowers have long shoots; gardeners also call them “horns” or rosettes.

This shoot must be carefully torn off from the main tuber and transplanted into moist soil. Then the process is closed with a glass jar.

Under normal conditions, the first roots should appear within fourteen, maximum twenty days. After this, the flower grows like a normal plant, gradually forming its own tuber.

Each option is effective; the choice of method depends on the desire of the owner.

How does Persian cyclamen reproduce?

Persian plant species slightly different from the European one, not all breeding options can be used for it. Propagation by horns and tubers is considered the most effective.

Reproduction by horns is carried out in the same way as in the European cyclamen. However, this species takes root a little worse; out of ten shoots, only one can take root.

If you plant it with tubers, you need to prepare a special soil mixture.

To prepare it, take the following in equal proportions:

  • humus;
  • peat;
  • leaf soil;
  • turf.

The components are mixed, the soil is watered. After planting, place the container in a room where there will be diffused light and the temperature does not exceed 16 degrees.

To avoid excess accumulation of water and rotting of the root, you need to make holes at the bottom of the container through which water will flow out into the pan.

It is unlikely that a beginner will be able to propagate Persian cyclamen. The process is very painstaking and requires special skills.

Transplanting cyclamen babies

To transplant a flower with the help of children, you don’t need any special skills, the main thing is desire and diligence.

It is better to separate the children during plant transplantation. This will prevent injury to the plant and will make the work process easier.

In the future, the shoot should be planted in a separate container.

The pot should be half filled with soil, and the soil should be lightly watered. After 7 days, the first leaves will hatch, and feeding is carried out. Special compounds and minerals that are purchased in the store are used as fertilizers.

How to plant cyclamen from a tuber

To do everything as correctly as possible, it is important to follow the following instructions:

  • The transplant should be carried out during the dormant period of cyclamen, but not at the beginning, but at the very end of this period.
  • Plant the bulb or tuber root so that its top protrudes 1/3 above the ground. The main thing during planting is not to confuse the top and bottom of the corm. The upper part is slightly concave, growth buds may be visible, the lower part is convex. It is the convex part that needs to be placed on the bottom. Before this, it is important to fertilize the soil with minerals and prepare a drainage base.
  • Do not water the tubers until the first young leaves appear.
  • After six months, the root system will be completely rooted, and inflorescences can be expected in the near future.

Propagation of cyclamen by leaves, put in water, or plant in the ground

Leaf propagation is a fast and interesting method, but for the Persian species this option is not used, since the result will be zero.

Many, not knowing all the subtleties, use cut leaves, which are then immersed in water, and a day later they are planted in ordinary soil.In this case, the cyclamen will not begin to grow, since the leaves cut in this way will not take root.

You should not cut the leaf; it is important to carefully break it off the stem, preferably along with a piece of the tuber.

For propagation, it is better to use leaves that have fingers or roots.

After breaking off, the leaf is placed in water and left until the root appears. A special soil is prepared in advance, the leaf is transplanted into it and covered with a glass jar.

After twenty-one days, the root system will begin to grow, the plant will become stronger and a shoot will appear.

Now the shoot is transplanted into soil with peat, sand, leaf and turf soil, and humus.

Remove the pot with the plant from direct sunlight so that the leaves and stem do not begin to turn yellow and dry out.

As soon as inflorescences appear on top of the leaf, water the cyclamen. Pour water not into the pot, but into the pan, thanks to this the root will take as much moisture as it needs.

So, propagation of cyclamen is a simple procedure if you follow the instructions strictly and use healthy and high-quality planting material. If you have a Persian type of flower, then it is better to ask a grower or florist to carry out this procedure

We grow cyclamen as a treatment for sinusitis. One day we had to leave urgently and we didn’t water the flower for 2.5 months. Despite the fact that the upper part was all withered, the tubers were healthy and when watered, the flower soon began to expel new greenery. Therefore, I have no doubt that it will be accepted with any method of reproduction.

I planted cyclamen seeds. Well, they are slow-witted after all. I planted several different varieties. They sat in the ground for three months. Then they released one leaf at a time. As soon as they got stronger, I planted everything in separate pots. And that’s it - now all my seedlings are gaining roots, although it was written everywhere that the second leaf will appear in a month. The fourth one has already started and they have just laid a kidney. Although I do everything according to the rules.
