Currant cuttings

Currant cuttings are a method of propagating currants using cuttings. As cuttings, you can take basal annual shoots or mature annual growths with an apical bud.

Blackcurrant cuttings should be prepared in early spring, when the snow melts, at which time the buds swell. Cuttings must be selected from the more mature part of the shoot. It is better to use the middle of the shoot, since the top and bottom parts take root worse. The length should be up to 18 centimeters. We make the upper cut oblique, it should be a centimeter above the upper bud. The lower cut should also be oblique and be immediately below the bud.

It is better to cut the cuttings with a knife, then the cut will be smooth. Ready cuttings are stored in a cool place and need to be moistened periodically.

When the soil is free of snow and thaws to a depth of 20 centimeters, planting can begin. The cuttings are planted obliquely at an angle of 45 degrees; 2 buds can be left above the ground. The distance between cuttings should be 15 centimeters, and row spacing should be 30 centimeters. It is recommended to place the row from the north to the south. In this case, roots will form faster and buds will bloom. Root development lags slightly behind bud break, so this tip will help improve establishment. In autumn, annual seedlings with several shoots grow. They can now be transplanted to the main place.

Cutting currants is not particularly difficult; if you complete all the steps, you will receive an excellent harvest of healthy and tasty berries in the near future.
