Homemade mower for walk-behind tractor - how to make it yourself
A self-made mower for a walk-behind tractor will help save the family budget and guarantee the quality of the tool. In this regard, it is necessary to consider such types of equipment intended for mowing grass, the construction of which allows living conditions.
Such devices are divided into several main types: segment, rotary and cart mowers. For rotary and segment mowers, the basis is a frame made by welding, from a steel angle with side dimensions of 40 millimeters. All other equipment is attached to it.

Rotary mower
This type of equipment can be used to trim lawns or mowing grass to make hay. It is necessary to pay attention to the fact that this device can efficiently cut tall grass, and crush and break up low grass.
The main working tools are knives. They are attached to the surfaces of metal circles with a shredder. The device of a rotary mower for a walk-behind tractor operates using a power take-off shaft or a belt pulley, using a belt, it depends on the model used walk-behind tractor.
In order to make a homemade rotary mower with your own hands, you will need two disks for the rotors.They need to be cut from sheet steel with a thickness of at least 2.5 millimeters and a diameter of 39 centimeters. The bottom of a metal barrel containing machine oil or discs from an agricultural seeder is perfect for this.
You need to make eight strong steel knives. For their manufacture, steel with a marking such as 65G is suitable, or segments can be used as knives for a segment-type mower.
Attach 4 knives to the disks. To attach them, you will need to drill holes in the iron circles using a metal drill with a diameter of 6mm. The cutting elements must be secured to the disk using a shredder. The gap between it and the cutting element should be 2mm greater than the thickness of the knife. It is necessary that they rotate freely around their own axis. Thanks to this, the knives will not break if they encounter something strong on their way.
Weld pieces of metal pipe strictly in the center of the circles, through which the working disks will rotate. The weld seam must be made strong. A hoeing disk is suitable as a support located below.
The diameter of this disk cannot exceed 45 centimeters. If the size is larger, then the excess needs to be cut off with a grinder.
Important!!! The discs on a rotary mower must be installed so that they rotate inward. This will create a neat swath of mowed grass.
To make an axial shaft, you will need a piece of metal pipe with a diameter of 3 centimeters and a pair of bearings 180 and 106. The lower bearing must be secured to the axle, and the upper one to the pulley. Install the discs on the axles, then weld the shaft to the pulley using welding. The rotation of the disks is ensured by bearings.
To ensure safe operation of the device, one must not forget to install a protective casing.
Segment mower
To make your own homemade segment mower walk-behind tractor, you need a rectangular metal plate 120x5x1.5 centimeters. At the same distance from each other, you need to drill 12 holes with a diameter of 10 millimeters for M8 bolts.
This is necessary to attach the guide, the length of which is 89 centimeters. Knives and teeth are installed on it. There should be two such guides and they need to be installed on both planes of the plate. Before installing the guides on which the knives are secured with rivets, it is necessary to install the skids.
Guides will move along them. Then secure the guides using clamps, which are needed to hold the guides with knives on the metal plate.
Important!!! The knives, being in the extreme left or extreme right state, should converge in the center of the vertices. In other words, they must find exactly one to one without bias. If this condition is met, grass mowing will be of better quality.
It is necessary to install a wheel for support on the device chassis. The mower is driven by a PTO.
Mower wagon
This type of mower can be used in summer for mowing herbs, and in winter - to clear sidewalks of snow. This model has a rather complex design. It contains a pair of drums, which are connected by a frame and a transport belt, which has special hooks.
Pipes are welded for the frame. Then wheels and plywood are installed on it; tin can be used instead. The mower has a size of 800x400 mm.
Large diameter cans can be used as drums. You need to cut out both bottoms. Wooden circles are installed instead. Install the drums in pairs and secure the cutting surfaces to the bottom, four pieces for each.
When installing them, you need to leave a gap of 1 mm for free rotation. Then install the assembled drums on the frame. They need to be connected to each other with a transport tape, which can be made from a piece of rubber.
Installation Rules
If the mower is manufactured correctly, you will not be able to enjoy the result if it is connected to the engine incorrectly.
When installing homemade devices, you need to fulfill simple conditions:
- the walk-behind tractor must be in reverse mode;
- When connecting the equipment to the PTO, the connecting unit must be installed in the corresponding coupling socket;
- You need to secure the equipment using a pin on which a lock is provided. This will prevent your finger from falling out during operation;
- knives need to be covered with a casing for protection in order to protect themselves and those around them from pieces of grass and earth flying from under them, if there are a lot of molehills in the area where the grass is cut;
- starting mowing herbs, you need to start working at low engine speeds, while the clutch must be in the engaged state;
- When working with the mower, you should not rush, you need to make turns carefully and carefully.
Self-made device for walk-behind tractor should not pose a danger to others. Before you start making your own equipment, consider whether you have the skill and experience to do the job.
It may be better to purchase ready-made equipment or have it manufactured by a more experienced craftsman.
