How should you feed indoor plants?

House flowers need feeding. Fertilizers that feed garden plants are not suitable for this procedure. In this case, specially designed fertilizers for indoor flowers.

Mineral fertilizers
The lack of any microelements affects the condition of the indoor plant. For full development, flowers need:
- phosphorus, if there is a lack of it, flowering will not be abundant, and the leaves will become pale, the plant will begin to wither
- nitrogen affects plant growth and foliage quality
- potassium, if the plant lacks potassium, it may not bloom or will bloom with very small flowers;
- lack of sulfur will affect the leaves, they will wither
- calcium improves the quality of foliage, especially on the upper part of the flower
Indoor plants also require: magnesium, iron, copper, boron for normal development. Organic fertilizers improve the quality of the soil and make it more breathable. It is worth keeping in mind that bulbous plants and gerberas do not need organic fertilizers.
Ornamental plants, distinguished by a special variegated color of foliage, may lose their individual properties due to improper feeding with organic fertilizers; their leaves will acquire the usual uniform color, without spots.
Mineral fertilizers improve the nutrient medium soil, from where plants receive the elements necessary for growth. All organic fertilizers are divided into three main groups:
- Nitrogen: ammonia, calcium, sodium, urea, ammonium sulfate.
- Potassium: wood ash, potassium nitrate, potassium sulfate.
- Phosphoric: simple and double superphosphates.
Each type of mineral fertilizer is introduced at a certain period of plant development. Initially, the flower needs nitrogen fertilizing, and before flowering and during flowering, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are needed.
Only healthy plants are fed with minerals. You cannot fertilize flowers that are not rooted. Mineral fertilizers are introduced directly into the soil. But most mineral preparations are diluted with water, and the resulting solution is sprayed on the leaves.
Organic fertilizers
Fertilizers from the organic group are also useful for indoor flowers, like mineral ones. They are based on processed plant products. The group of organic fertilizers for indoor flowers includes:
- peat
- wood ash
- onion broth
- eggshell
- sugar
- aquarium water
Peat is a product of the vital activity of swamps, its composition includes minerals, it is also rich in carbon content. Peat has a positive effect on plant growth; it is able to retain moisture. Peat is added to the soil intended for planting indoor flowers. Its content should not exceed 30% of the total amount of soil.
Wood ash is an effective fertilizer, which contains many useful microelements. Only ash that does not contain harmful impurities from burning plastic and printed materials will be useful. Wood ash has the following positive qualities:
- disinfects the soil
- nourishes the soil
- reduces soil acidity
Ash is a very active agent; if overdosed, it will burn the plant. Onion decoction for feeding indoor plants is prepared as follows:
- 50 grams of onion peels are poured with two liters of hot water.
- place on the stove and bring to a boil
- infuse for three hours
The resulting decoction is sprayed onto the flowers, and for watering, the onion decoction is diluted twice. This product helps fight pests and fungal diseases well. Eggshells contain calcium. This property can be used to feed plants. The shell is filled with water and infused for a week. Flowers are watered with this infusion. Sugar solution is useful for indoor flowers.
To prepare a nutrient, take a teaspoon of sugar and dilute it with half a liter of water. Water from the aquarium can be used to water indoor plants. This water contains useful biological substances. But often this procedure is not recommended. Once a month will be enough. Such feeding will only be effective during growth. Namely in the spring-summer period.
Rules for feeding plants
The process of feeding plants is a fairly responsible procedure. In order not to harm the plants, certain rules must be followed. When fertilizing indoor flowers, you should remember the measure. An overdose of nutrients can be much more harmful than a lack of nutrition.
When fertilizing plants, you must consider:
- house flowers are fertilized during the period of their active growth or flowering
- in winter it is better not to disturb the plants, at this time they are in a state of rest
- if the fertilizer is intended exclusively for introduction into the soil, it is important to ensure that it does not get on the leaves of the flowers
- Before carrying out the procedure, you should thoroughly water the soil, this is done so as not to burn the roots of the flowers
- Only healthy flowers need to be fed
- fertilizers are diluted in water at room temperature
- nutritional preparations should be alternated; it is not recommended to constantly use the same remedy
When flowers need feeding
House flowers really need additional nutrition. Plants deplete the soil in which they grow. Over time, the soil loses nutrients and minerals. To prevent the plant from getting sick, it is necessary to regularly saturate soil useful substances. The following symptoms are a signal that a flower needs additional nutrition:
- the plant began to grow slowly
- the stems became thin and elongated
- the leaves have become faded
- rare flowering observed
- yellowing and wilting of foliage
- the flower no longer resists diseases
To prevent the appearance of such signs, it is important to take care of the health of the flower in advance and select the necessary fertilizers for it. Correctly and timely feeding procedure will prevent the death of the plant and will promote its active growth and flowering.

We usually feed indoor plants with liquid special fertilizer, 2 plugs are for 1.5 liters of water. We water the plants every 10 days. Last week, we decided to feed the flowers with onion peel tincture. It is clear from the plants that this fertilizer suits them. The flowers look better.
