Preparing for landing
The second half of August is an excellent time for planting flowers, a kind of guarantee that the peony will bloom with beautiful and large flowers. If there is an urgent need, you can replant peonies in spring or summer, but next year they will bloom with a few small flowers or will not bloom at all. But in August comes the most favorable period for dividing peony bushes or planting new flowers.
If the whole procedure is performed correctly, then within a few years the bush will grow and give you many beautiful flowers. But before planting, you need to do some preparatory work. Dig a hole where it will go planted bush. The depth of the hole should not be less than 70 cm; it is this condition that will allow the formation of a full-fledged root system.
In order to prevent the appearance of fungal diseases and oxygen deficiency, the bushes should be located no closer than 1 meter from each other. The hole should have a size of 70x70x70 so that all the roots along with the soil can freely fit into it.
The soil that remains after digging the hole must be mixed with compost or manure. It is also recommended to add fertilizers, which will help the flowers develop even faster. In autumn, flowers need to be fed with mineral fertilizers with the addition of potassium, and in spring with nitrogen.
At the bottom of the hole you need to put drainage in the form of broken bricks, small stones, and cut branches. Sprinkle some of the prepared soil with fertilizer on top. After you have completed all the preparatory procedures, you can begin planting the flower.
Conditions of care
To plant a peony, you need to carefully select a place. It should be well lit, because peonies love the sun, although they will accept partial shade normally. In addition, the place should not be windy, without drafts. Flowers will not be able to develop and produce beautiful flowers if the bush is in a draft. The flower itself will be sickly, small, and will bloom rarely.
It is also not recommended to plant peony near the house: heat will be given off to the wall, and this will overheat the plant. It is best to plant the flower at a distance of at least 2 meters from the end of the foundation of the building. As for watering, flowers should not be over-watered or planted in places where the ground is constantly wet. This leads to the root system simply rotting.
In addition, if the groundwater in the place where you plan to plant flowers approaches the ground more than a meter, then peonies should be planted in raised beds. The soil must be of normal density. If the soil on your site is clayey, then you need to additionally mix in sand and peat.
Planting a flower and caring for it after planting
The procedure for planting and arranging flowers has a certain algorithm. It is necessary to split off a piece from the common root that has 2-3 shortened young roots and about 5 renewal buds. Too thin and small shoots will take a long time to grow and will not produce color for up to 3 years. But if you take a large piece, flowering may begin already in the first year, but due to the fact that new roots and shoots were not grown, the bush will quickly age and the color will weaken.
The stems are cut at a height of 5 cm, the flower is removed by prying the rhizomes from below, it is forbidden to hold the stems, as this can damage the buds. Roots that have sunk more than 15-20 cm into the ground can be safely cut off; they will quickly grow back. Roots that have just been dug up are very brittle, so after you have cleared them of dirt, leave them for 6-8 hours so that they can take root.
This way you will avoid injury to the root system during landings. In those places where the roots are easily separated by hand, this must be done, but where the roots are harder, they are cut off with a shovel. Where the roots are especially large and thick, they need to be divided using a pointed stake, which is driven in the middle and slowly splits the root.
As a result, for each fresh bud, you should get about 10 cm of light, thin but healthy roots. The hole needs to be filled halfway with the previously prepared mixture of peat and soil, then the flower is planted, which needs to be covered with earth to the level of the first bud. Compact the soil a little around the flower. In order for the flower to take root better, you can water it with a root solution in a proportion of 1 gram per 1 liter of water.
After this, mulch well with humus. If you do everything exactly as written in our instructions, then the flower will take root perfectly and will delight you with large, spreading and fragrant flowers.
Cultivation and care activities
In addition to planting itself, the peony needs to be looked after regularly. Fertilizer. Peony especially needs fertilization with potassium and nitrogen. Fertilizing should begin in the spring, from the moment the flower begins to sprout. In spring, phosphorus-potassium will perfectly support the plant. feeding, but in the fall you need to use substances that are saturated with nitrogen.
Trimming. It should be carried out in early spring, when the growing season has not yet begun. All damaged and dry branches need to be removed, but healthy old shoots need to be shortened by 10 cm. Mulching has an excellent effect on peony flowering. It should be produced in early spring using rotted horse manure. This method gives abundant and long-lasting flowering already in the next growing season.
Peony is a fairly common flower that can often be found in courtyards and summer cottages. But in order for it to actively bloom and give joy, you need to carefully monitor it and follow simple care rules.
