Preventive measures and pest control for apple trees

Apple tree
Apple trees are the main fruit trees in many gardens. Getting a bountiful harvest and protecting future fruits from various insects is an important task for a gardener when growing them.

Preventive spraying and whitewashing

It is easier to prevent any disease than to treat it over a long period of time. This rule also applies to pest control of apple trees.
An effective preventative measure to protect the garden from pests is early spring blue spraying. For it you need to prepare 3 - 5% Bordeaux mixture. To do this, on the day of spraying, add 300 grams of copper sulfate to 5 liters of heated water.
In another container, thoroughly stir three glasses of thick slaked lime, strain the lime solution through a mesh, on which foreign impurities and large pieces of lime will remain. Pour the vitriol solution into the milk of lime in a thin stream and mix. It turns out 10 liters of Bordeaux mixture for preventive spraying. Use the solution on the day of preparation.
Spraying begins from the near-trunk circle of soil, moving to the trunk and crown. Blue spraying is destructive for many pests, including pathogens. It is important to protect your eyes and respiratory organs and spray apple trees while wearing safety glasses and a respirator.
Whitewashing the trunks of apple trees is an effective, time-tested preventive measure against insect pests living in cracks in the bark, as well as against various lichens and fungi.
A simple whitewash mixture is prepared by adding slaked lime to water. But you can prepare a more effective and reliable mixture for thorough protection. In 15 liters of water, dilute a kilogram - two clay, a kilogram of manure and a kilogram of slaked thick lime or chalk. After three days, the mixture is ready for use; it is necessary to whitewash the trunks at a height of 1.5 meters, deepening the whitewash to the underground part of the trunk by 4 - 5 cm, having previously dug up the trunk to this depth, and after the procedure, bury it again. Whitewashing should be carried out in spring and autumn.
Many gardeners, trying to obtain ecologically clean apples, use biological methods of pest control for apple trees.

Biological measures against pests

Pests

The advantage of biological methods of controlling insect pests is that they can be used during almost the entire period of flowering, ovary and ripening of the crop.
Here a small, up to 1 mm, insect - trichogramma - comes to the aid of the gardener. After mating, these microscopic living creatures lay their eggs in the egg clutches of agricultural pests. Trichogramma is especially effective in the fight against aphids, codling moths, moths, and leaf rollers.
Adult insects do not harm the plant, feeding on nectar, but the larvae parasitize the eggs of apple tree pests and can significantly reduce or completely destroy their population. 1 - 3 grams of bacterial material is enough to destroy 80 - 90% of apple tree pests. You can purchase trichogramma in special laboratories. The full life cycle of Trichogramma does not exceed two weeks.
Spraying with infusions and decoctions from various crops and herbs helps against most leaf-eating insects, aphids, and codling moths:
  • wormwood
  • tobacco
  • potatoes
  • tomatoes
  • aconite
  • onion peel
  • garlic
It is better to spray with herbal infusions in the evening; the total number of such sprays per season can reach 5-6 times.
After the leaves of the crop bloom, you can fight apple tree pests using ready-made biological products:
  • fitoverm, destroys aphids, mites, moths
  • bitoxibacellin, universal remedy
  • entobacterin, effective in warm weather, not lower than +15
  • lepidocide, only affects caterpillars
Use biological products in strict accordance with the attached instructions.
Sometimes the degree of pest damage to lard is such that the use of strong chemicals is required to destroy them.

Chemistry against apple tree pests

Pests

Despite the fact that many gardeners are pre-conceived against the use of chemicals in their garden, if all the conditions set out in the instructions for the preparations are met, the processing times are strictly observed, making them safe for human life and health.
Treatment with karbofos will help defeat most insect pests. The first treatment should be carried out before the buds begin to bloom, and the second - immediately after the flowering period. When preparing a solution for spraying, maintain the concentration indicated on the packaging.
When treating apple trees with agricultural poisons based on organophosphorus compounds, it is necessary to observe safety precautions; at the first signs of poisoning with karbofos, chlorophos, theophos, it is necessary to stop processing and take measures to provide first aid to the victim and antidote therapy.
