Coniferous tree larch lives up to 500 years

conifer larch

The coniferous tree larch grows mainly in the Far East. Its forests make up 44% of the total forest area in the Far East. Most of these trees are concentrated in the Khabarovsk Territory, Amur and Magadan regions. In the Primorsky Territory, larch has gained little distribution, and therefore plays a small role in the forest fund of the region.

In the Far East xwar tree larch has several types:

  • Daurian;
  • seaside;
  • Kuril;
  • Okhotsk;
  • Amur

All species are combined into one group because they have similar morphological features. Larch is one of the largest trees the height reaches up to 35 meters, and the volume of the trunk is up to 1 meter. Life expectancy is 300 - 400 years, in some cases plus another 100 years. They have a loose crown, a cone shape, they are exposed to the wind, in this case the shape is one-sided. The top is stupid. The branches are not arranged in a clear order and grow scatteredly. Very fragile, especially in winter. Pollination occurs through the wind. Pollen does not have flight sacs, while fir and pine do. After the needles bloom, flowering begins. Male flowers are spikelet-shaped and yellow. And female cones are pink or red. The cones are small, ovoid in shape, and open immediately after flowering in autumn or after winter in spring.

When the cones release seeds, they remain on the branches for another one to three years and acquire a dark color.The seeds are small, just like the flowers, they are ovoid in shape and have a wing that is very well attached. The seeds germinate poorly, so pollination is poor. Most of them are empty. With cross-pollination, seed germination increases significantly and retains its properties for three years.
