Planting and caring for potatoes

Planting and caring for potatoes is not a difficult task, but it requires due attention and time. First of all, to plant this crop, you need to prepare the soil. This should be done in the fall. The area must be cleared of weeds and insect pests must be destroyed. Then dig up the soil, adding the following fertilizers (calculation per 1 sq.m.):

  • compost - 1 bucket,
  • superphosphate – 30g.,
  • potassium salt – 15 g.

In the spring, it is worth fertilizing the soil with nitrogen fertilizers.

You can start planting potatoes when the ground temperature is at least five degrees. Potato tubers are used for planting (if you want to harvest an early harvest, you should first germinate them.). Immediately before planting, you can delimit the planting areas using a thread, for convenience. Potato rows should be located at a distance of approximately 60 cm from each other. In a row, the distance between tubers is 30 cm. Planting depth is 6-10 cm.

Potato care

You need to start caring for your future harvest five days after planting. Arm yourself with a rake and lightly loosen the soil. This action will kill weeds and pest plants at the root. The same procedure must be done after each watering and rain, but only when the water is completely absorbed into the ground. The potatoes are fed with liquid bird droppings at the rate of 100 grams per 1 sq.m. Potatoes should be watered at the rate of 3 liters of water per 1 bush. The amount of watering depends on weather conditions (rain, drought), but is usually 3-5 times per season.
