Potatoes from seeds - features of the growing method

The most common way to grow potatoes is by planting tubers. This method is vegetative and has its drawbacks. In unfavorable climatic conditions, the vegetable begins to degenerate, valuable characteristics of the variety are lost, and the percentage of rejects increases. Sometimes more than half of all tubers intended for planting turn out to be unsuitable. In addition, ideal conditions are created for the transmission of various diseases, including viral ones, which are not always curable.
Improvement of planting material occupies gardeners around the world. One way is to use botanical (i.e. real) seeds. In this case, to sow 1 hectare of field, only 300 g of planting material is needed.
Potatoes from seeds can only be grown through seedlings. With proper care, up to 1 kilogram of vegetables can be obtained from one bush.
Seeds can be sown dry or sprouted after pre-soaking. They are planted to a depth of 1 centimeter, maintaining a distance of 5-10 centimeters. The box with seedlings is kept in a bright and warm place. During the first few days, the soil should be moistened. Plants are ready for planting in the ground in mid-May.
If you want to receive potatoes from seeds not affected by diseases, you should pay attention to specialized stores, where the planting material sold undergoes strict control. You can also try to grow tubers from berry seeds of self-grown plants. But it is quite difficult to predict the proportion of viable seeds.
