Decorative pond
We have a small pond on our property, literally a meter long. This is how they set it up for testing. But you want a decent, medium-sized pond. Who did this, if so? What do you need to consider and how to care for it?
For a pond, you need to select plants that would purify the water in it, for example, reeds, which are a natural filter. This plant is even used in biological treatment plants. Just don't let it grow.
To begin with, I advise you to choose the right place for the pond, then start looking for a bowl for the pond of the right size, you can even find ready-made ones with water purification filters or a mini fountain. Nowadays, there would be desire and money, and stores are teeming with various equipment and items for the garden.
on the topic of the pond, look, it also talks about fish
To have a pond on your property, you should also think about how it will have to be cleaned of silt deposits and the water replaced. The process is labor-intensive and it’s worth thinking carefully about whether all this trouble is necessary at all. It's better to make a rock garden.
The idea is great, why not? You really need to seek advice from professional builders. And if everything is done wisely, then perhaps the pond has the right to life. I heard about a new building material - fiberglass, which is used to reinforce just such structures. Take a look here, maybe you will find something useful for yourself. As for cleaning, this is a separate topic that deserves a lot of work.
Making a fiberglass bowl for a small pond will be very expensive. You can line its bottom with thick plastic film, gluing its joints using a blowtorch. Then the water from the pond will not leave.
Last year we also got a decorative pond on our site. And we decided to make a small flower garden at our summer cottage to decorate it at least a little. Now we are planning to order turnkey garden maintenance. Because after winter it obviously needs to be put in order)!
If I were you, I would buy a ready-made bowl. Firstly, there is no need to think about organizing the pit itself, since it is already ready. And you won’t have to strengthen the banks to prevent them from crumbling. And I also like it when they organize a fountain - such a pond looks very cool.
If you have a small pond, then I don’t think it will be very difficult for you to create a new, larger one. Care depends on what you want to get out of it. Some people like, for example, a swampy pond - this option definitely does not require any maintenance.
Think several times about whether you really need a large pond. The water in it stagnates and begins to smell unpleasant. If you make a pond with a bowl, then every year you will have to dig it up and bury it again, because not a single piece of plastic will withstand our frosts. I made such a pond, now I don’t know how to get rid of it. A foundation pit for a pond with all the associated amenities is already a serious expense. Better plant some flowers!
The pond will indeed stagnate and the blooming water will have to be pumped out. It is better to make a pond with fresh water, for example, it can help solve the water supply issue.
The supply of fresh water to the pond can be realized when there is a common water supply at the dacha. And the majority just have wells and organizing water supply from it is, at a minimum, not rational.
We just have a ready-made bowl, but we haven’t been able to find a larger one yet, and even the right size - we have a very large one, but it doesn’t fit. We still want to put some fish in. I wonder if this is possible.
Of course it’s possible, just choose smaller fish that come naturally from the river or from a pond. Our fish even survived the winter in the pond normally, although the pond is a meter by meter in size.
We made the pond as follows. They dug a hole of decent size. The bottom was covered with thick waterproof material, maybe something like film. This film was riveted on the sides, and the banks were lined with large decorative stones mixed with small ones. Sand was poured onto the bottom of the pond, then river pebbles and filled with water. Along the edges of the banks you can plant various plants at your discretion.
Pond, of course, is great. We also bought a ready-made bowl, but there was one problem. The water in this pond is stagnant and it begins to bloom, then the water has to be pumped out and cleaned.
There are small fish that perfectly clear the pond from silting. Plus, it will also add a special charm - fish in clear water attract attention even in a small pond.
If the pond is shallow, then in winter it will freeze out and the fish will die. Therefore, it is better not to stock it with fish, because there will be a lot of problems with its normal maintenance. It will be necessary to maintain the water level in it, pump it from somewhere, clean the pond, and in winter, make vents so that the fish do not suffocate.
In general, I don’t like ponds on the site, precisely because they become swampy. Then it is no longer a pond, but a swamp, and such an “interior” does not add beauty to the area.
So everything needs to be looked after and looked after. And a small pond, even if it’s three by three meters, doesn’t take much time to care for. Clean, possibly add chemicals, and so on. Beauty requires sacrifice :)
The pond can be smaller in size, for example, one meter by one meter. Maintenance will consist of removing leaves and debris and adding water to the pond. There is no need to add any chemicals, because an ecological balance will gradually be established in it.
Meter by meter, this is not a pond, but a puddle. And how can ecological balance be established in it if the water is not running, but in fact, replaceable? Stagnant water will begin to bloom, so there is no way without chemicals.
In any natural body of water, an ecological balance is established, even in a body of water meter by meter. To prevent the pond from drying out in the summer, it must be fed by groundwater, or you will need to pump water into the reservoir with a pump.
I just have personal experience with this pond. There is a small one at the dacha. It begins to bloom, even despite constant cleaning and care. I can only save myself with chemistry. And I must admit, you only need a little of it and it’s not expensive.
If a pond begins to bloom, it means there are small algae there. In a small volume of water, it is quite possible to do without the use of chemicals. Algae must be collected periodically with a net.
If space allows, then you can build a larger pond on the site, but I wouldn’t dig the hole itself and line it with all sorts of bells and whistles. It’s easier to buy a ready-made bowl, since they are sold in different sizes and shapes.
When I was a child, we had a vegetable garden within the city. So there was a crater from a shell explosion during the Great Patriotic War. The water in it was absolutely clear, but there were leeches there. And, naturally, no one looked after such a pond. He was already handsome.
My neighbors have had a fashion for decorative ponds since the year before last. It started with the fact that my godfather ordered a pond from a landscape studio , everyone in the area liked it and now they’ve organized a real competition to see who has the best)))
The pond is beautiful!!!! So I ordered on the website at least an inexpensive lamp for the street to put near the pond. So now I still need to buy a gazebo, but I’m generally silent about the roof. It’s easier to build something new than to redo something (And they made a pond out of stones and it turned out so beautiful, they lined it with petunias and threw in a lot of coins for good luck))

Caring for a big one is exactly the same as caring for a small one... Only more troublesome. But it's worth it. Choose your location carefully. The pond on the site creates a special atmosphere of beauty and comfort.
