Planting onions before winter
Planting onions before winter. Today we’ll talk about planting onions before winter. Many summer residents do not use this planting method, I don’t know what they fear. I have been planting onions before winter for five years now. It's very convenient, I'm happy with the results. What is the advantage of such planting... Well, first of all, I planted the onion in the fall and was free, I forgot about it. In the spring, as you know, there is so much work that you don’t know what to tackle first. Secondly, onions sprout early in the spring and quickly increase their green mass. Thirdly, a longer period of time for growth and maturation. Fourthly, onion sets are cheaper in the fall than in the spring, and this matters. I want to share my method of planting onions before winter. I definitely buy onion sets intended for planting before winter. Last year I planted the Raddar variety, this year I purchased the Forum variety. I prepare the bed in advance, at the end of August I sow phacelia or mustard on it to improve the soil structure. Around September 20, I mow the green manure, chop it, water it well and leave it for 10 days. Then I form a bed and make grooves for planting at a distance of 15 cm from one another, sprinkle a little ash or dry crushed mustard seeds. I plant the bulbs to a depth of about four centimeters and cover them with soil. I cover the bed from above a little, laying dry stems of Jerusalem artichoke or peas on it (this is for better snow retention, otherwise the snow may be completely blown away). That's it, planting is finished, now until spring. Have a good harvest everyone. I advise you to read the information that may be of interest to you... Read also about the bow of the Old Believers.. Well, if you didn’t have time to plant onions before winter, don’t worry, since there is no difference (except, as the author rightly noted, workload) the season of planting: autumn/spring. For greenery in early spring, it is wiser to plant perennial onions
Onions planted before winter ripen in July.By the way, the benefit here is double: firstly, when the onion fly threatens spring plantings, the onion planted before winter is already strong enough, and the pest hardly damages it; secondly, harvesting occurs at a relatively quiet time, and in the vacant beds you can sow greens or early ripening vegetables - they will ripen quietly before the fall.
We have onions in one place in the garden, they have been growing for several years. We don’t replant it before winter and it doesn’t have a bulb. We grow onions only as greens for salads - it’s very convenient. In winter, onions do not freeze.
In this regard, I like multi-tiered onions. They form several tiers with bulbs on the stem. And its greens are juicy and very tasty, and do not freeze. And it rises as soon as the snow melts.
Of course, before winter, onions can only be planted with seeds for greens. If you plant it as a seedling, it will freeze completely. We have perennial onions; they have been growing in one place for several years. Where it grows thickly, we break through the onion.
This year we also planted onions before winter. And in December our snow melted and almost all the onions sprouted. Now I think that I won’t have an onion harvest in the spring.
You know, for the third year in a row I planted onions before winter with the hope that they would sprout, but as luck would have it, once again I didn’t achieve results. But reading the article gives a certain sense of optimism. I will try your method. Thank you!
Last winter I suffered, but nothing worked out for me. I planted it, but to no avail. Now I already know all the nuances, so I need to start preparing everything I need. After all, our onions go off with a bang both in winter and summer.
I really want to plant it, but I don’t know how
I always plant onions in the fall. Very comfortably. In early spring it already begins to emerge. While others are starting to leak, I sometimes pick it from the garden. Nice. It can withstand any frost.
I think a lot depends on the variety of onion itself and the region in which you are trying to grow it. So the winter garlic I get in the Moscow region is excellent. But the family bow turned out worse. Now I will plant it only at the beginning of May - in a month the arrows will still be ready.
We always plant onions before winter. It easily survives snow and frost, but in early spring it begins to melt. As soon as it got a little warmer, the onions began to grow. We can already eat young onions :)

In the Moscow region we planted onions twice before winter. So we came to the conclusion that it is better to plant family plants in the spring, at the beginning of May, since those planted before winter grow a lot of shoots and are poorly stored.
We also plant garlic and carrots before winter, and onions for greens; they themselves grow in the garden for several years. In my opinion, the fact that the onion goes straight means that you are planting large onions. You need to buy a smaller seeding plant.
