Collecting seeds from vegetables

Do you collect seeds from vegetables for the winter and which ones? Do they sprout? Because I heard that a hybrid vegetable does not grow into a new fruit.

If you collect seeds from hybrid plants, they will simply degenerate, become the most ordinary, almost wild. You need to buy varietal vegetables, so you can collect seeds from them, and generations of plants will retain their qualities.

We only bought hybrid varieties of cucumbers and they all grow well, but such varieties are not suitable for collecting seeds. In general, it is better to buy seeds from well-known brands. They come already processed and prepared for planting. Our own seeds are not treated with anything.

Agree. With F1 there will be seeds, but what will grow is completely different from what was in the bag. I buy cucumbers, tomatoes, zucchini, squash, pumpkin - regular, zoned. They make good seeds

Everything will grow great from a hybrid. The only question is WHAT will grow. But the experiment can be fun.

I collect from all non-hybrid ones - germination is higher than that of seeds in packs, but the plants are weaker and require more care, especially hybrid ones.Once I planted cucumbers and I don’t bother with them anymore - they sprouted, but there was no harvest, although I didn’t do anything to them, and the ones I bought nearby in a pack of F-1 gave a great harvest!

Of course, seeds need to be collected, but not from hybrids, because if you buy them in a store, you don’t know whether they will sprout. For example, this year, out of two bags of daikon, only 3 plants sprouted. If you plant your own seeds, there will be much more seedlings.

We collect seeds from half of the crops ourselves. Here is the whole list: knobby peppers, corn, cucumbers, zucchini, pumpkin, tomatoes, potatoes. For everything except potatoes, I choose material only from well-ripened fruits. But there are also those that we buy every year. These are: cabbage, eggplant, carrots, table and fodder beets, watermelons, melon, onions. Collecting from the latter is troublesome, and you need to know the period.

Three years ago, when I grew cucumbers at my dacha for the first time, a couple of them immediately outgrew during my absence. I deliberately did not pick them and held out until the fall. Then everything turned yellow, and later dried up completely. Two fat bellies moved to the city to the windowsill of an apartment. However, it was not possible to obtain seeds from them. It seems that the fruits were not going to give off seeds, remaining in one pore.

If a yellow cucumber appears on the vine, then it will not allow other vegetables to grow normally. Therefore, there is no need to keep a cucumber with seeds on the bush for so long. It is better to buy seeds in the spring.

I collect seeds from those vegetables that my mother “inherited” them to me. They germinate year after year without problems. But I rarely contact purchased ones; most of them are indeed hybrids, and they do not produce a second harvest.

On the contrary, I mainly buy seeds, and my neighbor provides me with her seeds. She collects cucumber and tomato seeds. These vegetables grow well and are very tasty, I especially like her tomatoes.

I collect from pumpkins, from zucchini - I mainly use fodder varieties, the yield does not fall, I take seeds only from the largest fruits. I also collect seeds of asters, marigolds, lavatera, and some other types of flowers.

We collect seeds from some varieties of tomatoes, from red sweet peppers. Seeds from hybrid varieties also give a good harvest. We also collect seeds of winter garlic, and in the second year we get an excellent harvest.
