Cedar

Contrary to popular belief, real cedars are not frost-resistant plants; in nature they are found only in areas with warm climates and mild winters: in Cyprus and Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, India and Pakistan, Lebanon.

In the southern part of Crimea, the cultivation of various types of cedar is also practiced, except for the short-coniferous Cypriot cedar, which is the most sensitive to low temperatures.

All cedar plants are divided into types:

  • Lebanese
  • Himalayan
  • Atlas
  • Cypriot

Cedar pine, what is the difference?

The plant that grows in Siberia, which we call cedar, is actually a pine tree. In some ways, these conifers are similar, but there are also significant differences between them, for example, in life expectancy and the temperature regime necessary for normal development, in the structure of the plant itself.

Both types of wood are valuable. Cedar pine nuts are highly valued in the food, cosmetics and medical industries., from which high-quality oil is extracted. They are a source of valuable minerals and vitamins.

The fruits of real cedar are inedible.

How to grow cedar in an apartment

If we are talking about growing a handsome evergreen, then first of all you will need to get a plant seedling or its seeds. You can also grow cedar from a branch of an adult plant; it can be sprouted in a container with water.

It should be noted that in conditions with harsh winters, only Siberian pine can be grown in open ground; dwarf cedar can be grown in an apartment, in a flower pot.

Of course, it is impossible to get a real mighty tree indoors, but a very beautiful bonsai is quite possible. Of course, in this case it is necessary to follow the rules of care and pruning.

How to grow cedar from a seedling

It is not difficult to grow cedar pine from seedlings in a suburban area. The seedlings obtained after stratification and sowing of seeds are planted in separate containers or planted in a greenhouse. They are grown for 3-5 years in protected soil conditions.

During the first time after planting in open ground, provide:

  • gentle care
  • penumbra
  • systematic watering
  • feeding

An established and strong seedling does not need special conditions for wintering - it can withstand frosts and is not afraid of northern winds; it also does not need mulching of the soil.

An adult plant will no longer need feeding or watering.

How fast does cedar grow?

This question interests many readers; in fact, in the first years the growth of the tree is very small.

From the age of fifteen, the development of the plant becomes rapid.

If care is correct, fruiting can begin at the age of 20-25 years.
