Potatoes don't grow
For some reason, every time I harvest from the garden, the same question always arises. Why do our potatoes grow very small and there are very, very few of them in the bushes?
For some reason, every time I harvest from the garden, the same question always arises. Why do our potatoes grow very small and there are very, very few of them in the bushes?
Apparently, they planted small potatoes, in addition, the soil may be acidic, there is no watering, you rarely water it, do not hill up the bushes and do not apply fertilizers. Here are the main reasons for the low potato yield.
It seems that we are doing everything necessary, but the potatoes are still small, and they turn out that way; I can’t find the reason why they are missing. The neighbors are less likely to fool around with potatoes and theirs is much better.
The soil needs to be fertilized. Every year we bury a huge amount of old hay and grass dust mixed with rabbit manure in the potato field. And the potatoes are excellent, especially Adretta and Detskoselskaya.
Hay, when processed in the soil for fertilizer, takes a lot of nitrogen from it, so it is best to build a compost heap at the edge of the plot and fertilize the potatoes with compost.
Give the soil at least a year to rest; don’t plant anything in it this year. And after a year, try to plant a new one. The earth also tends to get tired, which is why the harvests on it are getting worse and worse.
It is possible that the potatoes were planted densely, and small potatoes were chosen for planting. The potatoes were not fertilized, poorly weeded and not watered abundantly a couple of times a season. In addition, you cannot plant your own potatoes every year. Planting material should be updated.
Yes, by the way, on the topic of planting material, I somehow didn’t even think about it, although I myself haven’t planted potatoes for a long time, but when I did, I constantly exchanged material with my neighbors in the dacha, though I didn’t really understand why it was necessary.
In our region, you cannot constantly plant potatoes grown in your own garden; they become small within a few years. In addition, you should not plant small potatoes either; they will not yield a large harvest.
Firstly, the earth is degenerating. Plant the same potatoes in the turf along the edges of the garden and see how healthy they will be. And secondly, you can’t constantly plant your own potatoes. You are probably planting your own seed.
It is quite possible that it has something to do with the quality of the planting material. We once invested, bought good seed potatoes (Rozara, Lyubava, our local variety Tuleevsky) and the harvest turned out completely different. But after a while the potatoes began to get smaller again, so I had to renew the seeds. Or maybe the potato is not satisfied with the quality of the soil, it wants humus or sand...
