Chestnut

Tell me, is it possible to replant chestnuts from place to place now? They are already five years old. The height of the tree is somewhere a little more than one and a half meters. We want to plant them, but we are afraid that it is too late and they will die.

To be honest, I wouldn't dare do this. The trees are already quite old and in order to replant them you need to have certain knowledge and be able to carefully dig them up, but ordinary people without special means cannot do this.

I don't even know what to recommend. If you have several chestnut trees, then experiment on one and see if the tree takes root or not. If everything goes well, then the rest can be transplanted.

Why did you plant chestnuts on the plot? Yes, in the spring they bloom very beautifully and the inflorescences emit an intoxicating aroma. But in the fall, these trees turn into “killers”. I remember one day in September I was walking along an alley of chestnut trees, and one fruit stuck in my head so much that I thought I would have a migraine for the rest of my life.

Sveta, we didn’t plant chestnuts on purpose so that they would stamp someone on the crown ;-D We just planted them so that they would get stronger outside in a flower bed under the balcony. And then all hands did not reach them. so they remained. Every spring and autumn we all try to plant them, but it still doesn’t work out...

I think it’s too late to replant five-year-old chestnuts; they will most likely die. When replanting, you will not be able to dig up all the roots, since they are already quite large.

The most difficult task when replanting will be to avoid damaging the roots. And the chestnut roots are very powerful. If you can cope with this task, then feel free to replant the trees.

Tell me, why did you decide to transplant chestnuts? I think that when planning to plant trees, you need to take everything into account. Otherwise, replanting the tree may result in its death.

Serafima, we didn't plan anything. At first they grew at home in an ordinary flower pot. Then in the spring we somehow planted them outside, under the balcony. They thought, let them get stronger. Then one fall I didn’t get around to taking them home again or replanting them while they were small. They left it that way. But so many years have passed, the chestnuts are already trees and grow so crowded. So now we want to replant, but we don’t know if it’s possible at all and if so, when?

It also seems to me that there is no point in replanting them - they are unlikely to take root in a new place... This is only if you fertilize them with something in advance and replant them with the utmost care.

Girls, thank you all for your advice. But we decided to leave the chestnuts the way they are growing now. We think it’s too late to replant them, and if they die, it will be a pity. So they were left to grow as a “forest”.

I would make it simpler, I would still try to replant the extra trees. If they die, then plant young ones in that place. Trees that grow too densely sooner or later will still shade each other and eventually the weak ones will die.

We planted the chestnut next to the fence and everything turned out very well, but, of course, we don’t plant trees next to it, since everything is quite shaded, since the foliage of the chestnut is very massive.

I think that nothing terrible will happen, the chestnut will take root, the main thing is weather conditions and your desire to care for the plant after transplantation, but you can leave it like that. It's strange that you didn't transplant it earlier.

It is better not to replant five-year-old trees, because their roots have already grown and when digging up the tree, they will partially break off, therefore, in order for such a tree to take root well in a new planting site, the crown of the tree must also be reduced so that the remaining roots can feed the tree.

In our city we carry out winter gardening, planting hefty trees with a huge lump of earth in the middle of winter. Survival rate 90%. So even 5-year-old chestnuts can be replanted.

I don’t think anything will happen, even older trees are sold for replanting
