Thanks to the long and productive work of breeders, a huge number of potato varieties have been developed, each of which has unique characteristics and properties. Nowadays, every summer resident can grow any variety of potatoes in accordance with his needs.
However, among the great variety of varieties, there are favorites, which are in many ways superior to others. One of the most popular potato varieties is Rocco, which was bred in Holland and has been in great demand among experienced summer residents for a long time.
Potatoes Rocco in Russia
The Rocco variety has a rich and interesting history, during which it managed to take root in many countries of the world, including Russia. By the way, this potato variety has been grown in Russia for the second decade now, and it all started in 2002, when Rocco was included in the State Register of Potato Varieties of the Russian Federation. Since then, it has spread throughout the entire state and now it can be found in almost any food market or at a summer cottage where root crops and vegetables are grown.
Characteristics of the variety
Its growing season is about 100 days, so it belongs to the mid-season varieties. One of the striking indicators inherent in the Rocco potato variety is its high yield. From one bush you can collect about 12 potato tubers, while the weight of one tuber can reach a decent figure of 120-125g.
Rocco is a table variety, which means that the potatoes have excellent taste and a pleasant smell. The open type and wavy edges of the potato leaves are medium in size, and the flowering color (if any) is red-violet.
The Rocco variety is also attractive because it produces impressively sized, undeformed and pleasant-looking tubers with a distinctly colored skin. For the most part, the tubers of the Rocco variety are of the correct shape and look like a rounded oval. The skin of the potato is red, and the flesh is distinguished by its pleasant creamy white color.
The Rocco potato variety has an excellent taste, which is difficult to confuse with the taste of any other potato variety. It is ideal for cooking because it does not tend to change color during heat treatment. Even after cooking, the potato flesh remains white. It is worth noting that in most cases, when preparing chips or fries, it is Rocco potatoes that are used, since chips and fried potatoes from them are surprisingly tasty, crispy and can please even sophisticated gourmets. The starch content in the Rocco variety is 16-18%.
TO main advantages, thanks to which the Rocco variety stands out from the rest, can be attributed to its high resistance to drought, proven after numerous experiments, as well as excellent keeping quality. In addition to all of the above, Rocco does not show capriciousness regarding storage and transportation conditions and, in addition, has a very high commercial yield, which can reach up to 95%. Scientist-breeders also determined that the Rocco potato variety is very picky about its environment and growing conditions. Thus, summer residents can be sure that this variety will take root almost anywhere.
Disease resistance
The value of Rocco lies not only in its high and stable yield, but also in its resistance to various potato diseases, which not every variety can boast of. Rocco is highly resistant to potato cancer, as well as to the golden potato nematode. This potato variety has average resistance to leaf curling. The Rocco variety, among other things, also shows good results in resistance to wrinkled and striped mosaics. Regarding tubers and tops, Rocco, unfortunately, is less resistant to late blight. But it compensates for this with high resistance to the Y virus.
Thus, the Rocco potato variety is highly valued in the market for its qualities and is an ideal variety for retail sales.
It is not for nothing that it is called one of the best, since it contains everything that people actually like potatoes for. Nowadays, it is difficult to imagine the food market without Rocco potatoes, since this is what most buyers give their preference to.This is not surprising, because thanks to the quintessence of a wonderful taste and unpretentiousness to storage conditions, this variety is difficult to ignore.

What a good potato variety! And it looks just great and produces a wonderful harvest. It’s a pity that we are not in Russia, we don’t have such potatoes, most people plant “palm” or “neva”.
Yes, the fact that the variety is not very resistant to late blight is a serious drawback. On the other hand, there are places in Russia where people do not even know what late blight is. But for the North-West, of course, this is significant.
An excellent variety of potatoes and very tasty. I planted it once as a test, and now I just grow it all the time. Very pleasant to the taste and in any type of preparation. In addition, good fruitfulness.
I saw this potato variety for the first time this year and was immediately attracted to it, the tubers were clean and large - just right! We bought it in winter, liked it, and most importantly, it stores well and is tasty. I bought it for planting this year, primarily because of the storage and taste, I hope for productivity!
