Choosing cyclamen for a gift

It is very good if the person who decides to purchase this flower knows as much as possible about its properties. This will allow its future owner to admire the gift for a very long time and remember with gratitude the happy moment of receiving it.
The main questions that need to be clarified when buying a flower are the following:
  1. Type of plant. Cyclamen belongs to the genus herbaceous perennials. About 20 species are known, distributed in nature in the Mediterranean, Turkey, Iran and some places in Africa. Persian and European cyclamens are grown at home.
  2. External inspection of the flower. We need to start by looking at the tubers of Persian cyclamen. It should be large, round, protruding above the soil surface. Spots and wrinkled formations on his smooth skin are not allowed. The color of undeformed leaves should be bright and juicy. They do not sag and no yellowed ends should be present throughout the entire bush. Otherwise, you can buy a diseased plant, and it will quickly die. Not all flowers need to be open. It is better if they are in the bud stage.

Cyclamen care

Cyclamen

The long-awaited flower appeared and with it came the problems of caring for it. And they must be solved, although this is not an entirely simple task in the correct agricultural technology for growing a plant. Its most important elements include the implementation of optimal growing conditions:
  1. Lighting. Lifespan of one cyclamen plants can be 15 years, if all its needs necessary for development are taken into account and fulfilled. First of all, he loves bright diffused lighting without direct sunlight and without drafts. The best place for them is considered to be windows facing west or east.
  2. Temperature. Annual cyclamen bloom possible under strict temperature conditions. In winter, it should be in a bright, cool room with a temperature no higher than 15°. In summer, the optimal temperature is from 18 to 25°.
There are three different stages of watering, corresponding to different stages of flower life:
  1. During the dormant period from March to June, minor watering is sufficient to prevent the soil from drying out.
  2. During the period of flower awakening and green mass growth, in addition to regular watering, spraying is carried out to maintain the necessary humidity of the surrounding atmosphere.
  3. After the buds appear, spraying is stopped to avoid rotting.
During flowering it is necessary abundant watering, but water is delivered under the bush very carefully, preferably through a tray. Water should not get into the center of the flower or onto its leaves. This creates ideal conditions for the rapid development of diseases and numerous pests, to which cyclamen is very susceptible. Every two weeks during watering it is necessary to apply solutions of complete mineral fertilizer recommended for fertilizing.

Reproduction and transplantation of cyclamen

Cyclamen

The plant should be replanted in the summer, when it is dormant. To do this, take a medium-sized pot with a well-created drainage system. It is filled with soil consisting of peat, sand and humus. The ratio of all parts is the same. It is not allowed to use soil with an acidity value of about 7 units. In this case, fungal diseases quickly develop.
During transplantation, damage to the roots and deepening of the tuber are not allowed. Almost half of it must be above the surface of the soil in the pot, which ensures active flowering of cyclamen. All dry stems of the plant are cut off, and the plant itself is kept in a darker place during dormancy.
The plant is propagated by sowing seeds and division of the root system. When propagating from seeds at the end of summer, two difficult issues must be overcome.
The first is the later entry of the bush into the flowering stage. The second is associated with complex agricultural technology for caring for young shoots, which appear only from full-fledged seeds obtained through cross-pollination of flowers of different plants.
Moreover, shoots appear only when temperature conditions are created in the range from 18 to 20°. After two months, small tubers of young plants are planted in a separate container.
However, they must be completely covered with soil, unlike adult plants.
Young plants do not have a summer rest period. Therefore, caring for them should not stop. They are planted in a permanent place no earlier than the beginning of May. Young plants grown from seeds begin flowering after about 16 months. The reason for additional difficulties when independently propagating cyclamen by dividing the tuber is its death due to decay, which is very difficult to cope with.
All changes in the color of leaves and flowers must be carefully monitored. Cyclamen can very quickly get sick and die from various reasons. These include diseases such as fusarios, wet, gray and root rot, anthracnose, and sooty fungus. There are means to fight against each of them and, most importantly, to use them in time.
Delicate flowers reminiscent of butterflies, painted in shades of lilac, red and simply white, will decorate any home throughout the winter months, creating an atmosphere of creativity and beauty. For this, you need to learn how to care for him, overcoming all the difficulties and, quite possibly, the failures of the first attempt.

More than once I was given a pot of cyclamen for the holidays. But unfortunately it was not possible to grow it further. No matter how hard I tried. And I hid it in a dark place and watered it minimally, and replanted it, but nothing. Probably not my flower.

I, too, admired this beautiful flower not long after it was given to me in a pot. My mother-in-law had a wedding bouquet of cyclamen. I think that it is simply not intended for our apartments with dry air.
