Swamp iris - beautiful and unpretentious

iris

To decorate a pond or other small body of water, the marsh iris, a perennial plant, some specimens of which can be 180 cm in height, is perfect.

In nature marsh iris Found in wet meadows, floodplains, and on the banks of ponds throughout Europe, it has either yellow or blue flowers that begin to appear from late June. The plant is durable and unpretentious.

Landing

The iris should be planted in a container with soil, deepened by ten centimeters and all leaves and roots shortened by a third, and then the container should be immersed in a permanent place. The plant should be planted in shallow water, on soil that is often moistened, or on the shore of a reservoir from August to September. It is better to choose a place that is sunny and sufficiently protected from the piercing wind, but if this is not possible, partial shade is also suitable for marsh iris. The leaves of the plant need to be trimmed every fall. Swamp iris is quite winter-hardy, but some varieties may freeze slightly, in which case the container with the plant should be buried deeper into the soil.

The main thing in care and reproduction

The main condition for the flowering and decorative appearance of marsh iris is moisture. It tolerates flooding well, but dry soil is destructive for it. It is fashionable to feed with nitrogen fertilizers in the spring.

Swamp iris can be propagated by dividing the bush or by seeds. If there is no need for propagation, then it is necessary to cut off the seed pods before they open, so that self-seeding does not occur.

For propagation by seeds, they are sown in the fall in the ground to a depth of three centimeters. To propagate by dividing a bush, you need to divide the bush in August or spring and plant it in a permanent place; this can be done no more than once every five years.
